Cultural celebration or triumphalism

category antrim | miscellaneous | opinion/analysis author Monday July 12, 2004 15:40author by ona deathlist Report this post to the editors

Yes its that time of year again, up north, as 'traditional' 12th celebrations get under way as early as 12.00 pm on the lords day sunday, the 11th reminescent of traditional victorian traditons of sending children up chimneys, children as young as 7 years old are sent up to scale the dizzy heights of giant phallic bonfire sites stacking up crates and sorting out discarded rubbish.

The glorious 12th celebrations start on the 11th, which this year falls on the lords day sunday, normally good ould boy big pappa doc DUP paisley would be kicking up a storm about boozing and debauchery on the lords day sunday, but seeing as its the 11th double standards apply.
As drunken loyalists gather around their bonys for traditional cultural sing alongs of 'Do you want a pastie supper Bobby sands', hundreds of working class loyal protestants gather round their union jacks, in order to feel closer to the queen and more special and better than their working class catholic neighbours.
Then on the 12th we get to watch loads of proud pompous respectable upright citizen buisness men, the orange order old boy network parade about the place, go to a field and spout a load of crap about the ever enclosing dangerous fenian hordes.

Have you ever been to a St Patrick's day parade Nellie? The Irish Times today has a front page picture of a Belfast bonfire replete with tricolours and Sinn Fein posters for burning. When do you ever you see that sort of archaic sectarianism at a St Patrick's day bash?

Sorry Nellie, St.Patrick's day is celebrated worldwide by "PADDIES"of both religious and political backgrounds. One interesting historical fact about this is that the POPE was on Billys side! Which only goes to prove that the loyalist bretheren are about equally as confused about their identity as the Roman Church....So there billy boys and nellies, yis have lots in common with yer oul ally The POPE.

You can have fun and enjoy yourself on St patricks day no matter what your religion, but you can't if you're a catholic at a 12th celebration, because the 12th is all about hating catholics and republicans.

The 12th is basically a load of old decrepit rich respectable pillar of society bigoted old snobs in their pompous militarised authortarian uniforms prancing about the place, a sort of plastic capitalist celebration gone mad. Theres nothing fun about it, just a load of drunken squaddy families fighting each other and revelling in their chance to celebrate hating catholics.

Can't you feel it? Can't you see
the promise of prosperity?
It's overwhelming you and me,
it afflicts us like a disease.
Ubiquitous, compelling too:
we cling to you like crazy glue
and inject such a potent seed
it's best for all humanity.

The spread of culture, the sword of progress,
The vector of suffrage, a warm and septic breeze,
The pomp and elation, the duty and vocation,
the blood of the hybrid, it's just a recipie.

Reliving our ancestry, the frightful lack of harmony.
Our fore-fathers who led the way, their victims are still here today.
Now it's time to erase the story of our bogus fate.
Our history as it's portrayed is just a recipie for hate.
