Pro-war Euro Candidates, Name and Shame

category national | anti-war / imperialism | opinion/analysis author Wednesday May 12, 2004 15:30author by Eoin Dubskyauthor email info at votedubsky dot com Report this post to the editors

On January 29, 2003 a motion was proposed in Dail Eireann by Tony Gregory and Joe Higgins which could have stopped all US military overflights and refueling in Ireland. Among the candidates running for the European Parliament elections today, are men and women who voted against this motion, and instead supported the Government's pathetic apologia for western power and corruption.
Name and Shame No.1: Seamus Kirk (FF)
Name and Shame No.1: Seamus Kirk (FF)

"Foreign Conflicts: Motion" was moved by Tony Gregory at the end of January 2003, when thousands of American soldiers, their weapons and explosives, had yet to pass through for the invasion of Iraq. I reported on the matter here last February ( http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?id=28244 ), and still believe that it was a far more significant vote than the one on March 20th, when the invasion had already begun.

Seamus Kirk (FF) is running as a Euro Candidate for East (Leinster). He voted that day with the government against the anti-war motion. Indeed what they did was even more craven than just that. The Fianna Fail, PD coalition voted to gut the motion before them of all its contents and insert instead a disgusting ode to western power and corruption.

When Mr Kirk comes a' knocking, recall that his hands are soaked in the blood of Iraqi children.

I think that people like Kirk, DeRossa, etc should be exposed for their positions on the war on iraq. Surely that's why Eoin Dubsky is running- to show an alternative to these pro-war pro-US Imperialism candidates.

In their latest dodgy dipping of their politics in their RESPECT coalition with British muslim leaders and Sadam supporter George Galloway the SWP have called for an transfer to Blair's Labour Party.

"On the PINK ballot paper for London mayor you have two
votes: in the first column you should put an X against Lindsey German,
Respect – The Unity Coalition (George Galloway). In the second column,
your second preference, you may want to vote for Ken Livingstone."

The SWP's Respect Coalition has also called for a vote for Birmingham's People's Justice Party. The PJP base themselves among reactionary muslims in Bermingham. They recently called for people not to support the LibDems as they support children learning about gay relationships in school!

SWP: What are you doing? Whay are you voting against Women's Rights to be on the Respect platform for the elections?

to be naming and shaming Kirk and others. For a start the fact that you are running against him in the Euro election could lead to some people dismissing your post as a simple electioneering tactic.

Your posting smacks too much of US style negative campaigning and I don't think it will translate into more votes for you. Not that Leinster voters are logging onto Indymedia to check out candidates - but if they are your 'post might be too negative for the middle of the road voter who will determine these elections.

Your reputation as a committed peace activist could be undermined by such postings, if your anti-war position is construed by the media as an election ploy. There are enough bad bastards in the mainstream media who are itching to destroy any kind of progressive/alternative candidate and postings such as the one above will be a gift to them.

While its undoubtedly true that Kirk and others do share some complicity in the war in Iraq I don't think it is big enough issue for the kind of voters who will be voting. It's not going to get you elected nor is it going to prevent the election of Kirk. Maybe I'll be proved wrong but I suspect not.

I can't say I wish you luck as I think that it would be better if you didn't run as the Green candidate Mary White has a real fight to retain the Green seat and your candidacy could split the vote and allow in Kirk or some other right-winger.

So what if its an electioneering tactic?!

That is why he is standing in the election to expose these fuckers that support what is happening in Iraq.

I won't vote for Eoin, it is just my personal prefernce. However, I agree with his tactic. It is a tactic used by ALL politicians against their oponents.

Of course, the right wingers, or rather, geeks, will try come out with any rubbish argument.

The reason for this is simple; 21st century corporate right wingism is a mentalk disorder.

I personally believe capitalism to be a necessary evil, but that the likes of indymedia, etc, are part of the phenomenon called civil society. Pressure groups, etc, are needed to point out the discrepencies within society, so that they can be remedied and society can evolve as a whole.

Those who do the opposite are a disease. Remember, those at the top will try any tactic , I know I would. Supporting without question the views of mass media, FF/PDs, the ruling elite, etc, is a form of complacancy, and complacancy is a disease, much in the same way muscle will get wasted if a body organism sits down and does nought but watch telly.

Remembr, the real civil society is winning, those reprobates of the right wil be tgoast one day.

Brendan O' Connor, The Devil already has an oven heated up and ready for you. You KNOW you are a LIAR.Saddam has one ready and waiting also, it will just be a bit warmer, and his stay wil be longer.

Bush is a retard who will be reincarnated, and Dony Rumsfeld wil get mental health treatment. But it is those who know they are lying just so they can get their pay check, now they are going to be the Devil's stew.
