275 European Politicians Call for Sanctions on Israel

category international | anti-war / imperialism | press release author Tuesday May 04, 2004 17:29author by Claudia Bradshaw - Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaignauthor email supportpalestine at ireland dot comauthor address IPSC, PO BOX 9124, Dublin 1author phone + 353 87 6242286 Report this post to the editors

Supported by 12,000 Irish people and 52 Irish Politicians

The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the European umbrella body for Palestine support groups, the ECCP, today handed the Secretary General of the Department of Foreign Affairs petitions signed by 275 European parliamentarians, 210 European NGOs and over 12000 Irish citizens, calling for trade sanctions against Israel unless human rights abuses in the Occupied Territories are ended.

The parliamentarians’ petition, signed by 52 Irish TDs, Senators and MEPs from all parties as well as independents, pointed out that the construction of the ‘separation wall’ through the West Bank is the culmination of years of human rights abuses.

Speaking at a press conference after handing in the petitions, Raymond Deane, IPSC Chairman, said “The EU-Israel Association Agreement grants Israel favourable trading terms with the EU. This agreement includes a clause, which says that it is based on respect for human rights and democratic principles. The building of the West Bank wall, which will dispossess and impoverish thousands of Palestinians, is the latest proof that the Israeli government does not respect these principles.

“If the EU’s commitment to human rights is to be taken seriously, it must act now on the Association Agreement. Otherwise the human rights clause in that agreement will remain a dead letter.”

Agnès Bertrand, coordinator of the ECCP, said “The Department of Foreign Affairs told us that consensus in the EU on sanctions is impossible and that sanctions would damage the EU’s ability to influence Israel. They said that the important thing was to re-establish dialogue between the two sides and to use the roadmap to bring about peace. But this is at odds with the reality on the ground. The Israeli government is destroying Palestinian society and has proved that it does not want the roadmap or dialogue. In the long-term the current situation is not sustainable for anyone. While the Palestinians suffer, hatred for Israel grows dangerously. Sanctions are the only option left.”

Maren Karlitzky, European coordinator for the Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign, said “The level of support for this petition shows that European people do not agree with their governments’ position. Ordinary people in Europe are completely opposed to the actions of the Israeli government and support the struggle of the Palestinian people.”

Caoimhe Butterly said “Comprehensive sanctions played a fundamental part in raising international awareness of the oppression suffered in Apartheid South Africa. We are calling for official endorsement of a boycott of Israeli goods, whose purchase now helps pay for the illegal and immoral occupation of the Palestine territories. The Irish government should take a much stronger stance in opposing the illegal actions of the Israeli government.”

Thank you for posting this press release Claudia. Earlier in the year there was an article in Phoenix mag, and a press release from Amnesty International Irish Section ( http://www.amnesty.ie/user/content/view/full/1624 ) about Irish company Cement Roadstone Holdings and the Israeli "security wall". Are they still supporting the apartheid project?

...this is the kind of thing that works. The government WILL think a little differently on Palestinian issues because of this. Keep it up! I'd bet you could get a quarter-million Irish signatures (or more) with a serious, focused effort. Again, well done. You've achieved something here.

The Israelis have completely lost world public opinion - the challenge now is to convert anti-Israeli public opinion into actual policy - sanctions, boycotts, diplomatic isolation, etc. This action works towards that goal.

Justice WILL come to palestine - and it won't be kind to the Israelis...

and the House of Israel is as divided as ever.
What is Zion about?
it's not that good for plonking radar on.
it's not such a pawn bundled up in scorn as Gaza.
it's (and let's be deep here), not about yet less than sixty years of loss of the dream.

Isreal is Europe's son,
made of European victims,
who promptly got eaten by that nasty old dragon

EU allocates $1.4b to Mediterranean to enhance ties, create jobs, help peace
By The Associated Press

DUBLIN - Hoping to boost the `stuttering' Middle East peace process, the European Union yesterday pledged 1.2 billion euros ($1.43 billion) in assistance to Israel and Muslim Mediterranean states and said it will increase its aid in coordination with the World Bank.

The announcement came a day before EU, Israeli and Arab foreign ministers open a two-day meeting. EU External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten said the aid for 2005-2006 showed that despite "the stuttering Middle East peace process, we still maintain our aspiration to build a common zone of peace, prosperity and progress in the Mediterranean region."

The EU's Euro-Med outreach program has poured more than 10 billion euros in economic and financial aid for Israel and its Mediterranean neighbors since 1995 to shore up peace efforts.

Uniquely, it has Israel sitting down once or twice a year with the Palestinian Authority, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Tunisia and Turkey also take part in the talks and Libya is an observer.

EU officials had hoped Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi would apply for full membership during a landmark visit to the EU head office last week, but he did not.

In a statement, Patten said forcing Israel and the Palestinians to make peace is not enough. "Working with modernizers in the region will give us more solid and sustainable results. Inducement, not imposition, is the way forward," he said.

Recent terrorist attacks in Casablanca, Istanbul and Madrid, he added, have reinforced the relevance of the Euromed program as a forum of "solidarity and cooperation between the EU and its southern partners in tackling common security threats."

Today's meeting opens against the backdrop of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's embattled plan for a withdrawal from Gaza and an evacuation of four small West Bank settlements by the end of 2005. The unilateral Gaza pullout has been rejected by Sharon's Likud Party and criticized by many EU capitals, but is supported in Washington.

The EU spends about 1 billion euros a year on economic and other aid for countries along the Mediterranean's southern and eastern rims. If grants and loans from the European Investment Bank are added, the total is nearly 3 billion euros a year.

Yesterday, the EU, the EIB and the World Bank agreed to step up coordination of aid in the Mediterranean region to create a more focused and complementary approach in a region suffering from poverty and lack of economic opportunities.

The EU estimates that in the next 20 years, Europe's immediate neighbors to the south and southeast need almost 100 million new jobs to guarantee work for jobless people.

The 2005-2006 aid announced Tuesday will seek to boost economic reform, human rights, education and anti-poverty projects. It will be distributed as follows:

Algeria, 106 million euros; Egypt, 243 million euros; Jordan, 110 million euros; Lebanon, 70 million euros; Morocco, 275 million euros; Syria, 80 million euros; Tunisia, 144 million euros. In addition 215 million euros will be spent on projects across the Euromed region, including Israel.

In addition to money, the EU is also trying to narrow the Arab-Israeli divide through contacts between legislators, educational and scientific exchanges.

The United States last week lifted most of its commercial sanctions on Libya but trade restrictions with Europe remain, including an arms embargo.

Check the label of herbs and fruit in your supermarket for a made/produced in Israel sticker.

Alternately look at the first 4 digits underneath the barcode, the code 7290 denotes Israel although Israeli products from illegal settlements in the occupied territories are often deliberately mislabeled:

"The May 13 E.U. report said, "Israeli restrictions on the Palestinian economy inevitably lead to violations of the EU-Israel Agreement by both Israeli and Palestinian economic operators," with mislabeling of Palestinian products as made in Israel, due to Israeli "restrictions on Palestinian free trade with the rest of the world."

The E.U. expressed concerns in the report that to origin problem applys "to a substantial proportion of total exports into the E.U. of Palestinian originating products."

Israel reportedly has threatened that if the European Union boycotts goods produced in Israeli settlements in occupied areas, Israel would put an end to European efforts to be involved in the peace process. Also the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture threatened to remove previliges granted to Palestinian agricultural products."

Examples of big Israeli brands are
Jaffa, Carmel (fruit) and Delta Galil (clothing).

Those opposed to globalisation will notice that many of the multinational companies boycotted for other reasons, also helps the Palestinian cause:

BOYCOTT -this is really great
all the Arabs who the Israelis employ
to make or harvest " Made in Israel " and made in Gaza goods will be able to stay at home now . There they wil be able to make belts to put on their retarded 11 and 12 years olds . The EU can provide more EU and Irish taxpayers money to feed them meanwhile and when the peace talks start again they can send out more kids with bomb belts MADE IN PALESTINE so that they can kill more Jews and continue to live in even worse poverty than they have been in since Arafat started the 2000 Intifada again -
of course he did nt start the first one .
Very consistent economic thinking -from abject poverty you can only go upwards so that s how to keep the poor people happy .

then why do you continue with your sour grapes blockade of Cuba? Why do you impose trade sanctions against Libya and other states?

I'll tell you why, because it works against criminal apartheid regiemes like Israel as it did previously against South Africa.

Like the South Africans before them the Palestinians are in favour of a blockade and economic boycott against the criminal and bankrupt Israeli state!

As for your assertion that these products are actually harvested by Palestinians, are these the same Palestinians forced to wait for hours for "security" checks before being told they can't go to work? How would any of these people actually hold down a regular job in these circumstances?

Your assertion that the Palestinians would use the additional "free" time created by a boycott to plot further attacks this is another lie. Most of the Palestinians are unemployed anyway and their children malnolurished.

What they want is a rapid end to the Israeli occupation and the only way to do this is to bring the faltering Israeli economy to it's knees.

This could be achieved in less than a year by a concerted campaign of boycotts and sanctions and the Palestinians would be most grateful for this assistance in ridding them of their colonial oppressors!

Sanctions and boycotts work, so boycott Israeli products!
