The sweeping House of Commons reforms proposed by Green MP Ellie Chowns are evidence that the Mrs Dutt-Pauker types have moved from Peter Simple's columns into public life. We're in for a bumpy ride, says Sean Walsh.

More support for Mary Kelly in Galway

category galway | anti-war / imperialism | press release author Monday April 26, 2004 19:26author by shaolin - galway grassroots Report this post to the editors

Mary's court case and the racist referendum publicised

Mary Kelly, Nuria Dunne, Tommy D himself, and Nuria's daughter Bushra were out on Shop St again on Saturday last, doing sterling work to spread awareness of Mary's case. Michael D Higgins also dropped by. Support was widespread and donations were plentiful. Fair play to the big T once again for his stalwart efforts, and here's hoping that activists elsewhere will follow his lead.

MARY KELLY
needs your help

Mary Kelly is a 51 year old nurse and mother of four. She risked her life to provide medical aid to Palestinians in Bethlehem in 2002, & has also undertaken humanitarian work in Ireland, Colombia & Scotland.
Mary will be re-tried in Kilrush Co Clare on June 14th for disarming a US warplane at Shannon airport with an axe. If convicted she faces up to ten years in prison.
This was a courageous act of principle to protect innocent life, in defence of the Irish constitution and in accordance with International Law.

"Individuals have the duty to violate domestic laws to prevent crimes against peace and humanity from occurring." -- Nuremberg war crimes tribunal 1945-1946

Irish Constitution; Article 28.3.1:
"War shall not be declared and the State shall not participate in any war save with the assent of Dail Eireann."

"Mary Kelly is a rallying cry. She has done something courageous, she has done something in defence of a higher principle. She needs your help"
--Scott Ritter, US Marine and former weapons inspector in Iraq

Shannon airport is being used by the US military for the refuelling of planes that carry troops and weapons of mass destruction (including depleted uranium). This is a flagrant breach of Irish neutrality and our constitution. Our government has refused to take into account the views of the people of Ireland concerning this matter, or to inspect the warplanes. Our civilian airport is being used to facilitate international state terrorism, and poses a huge health and safety risk to the people of Shannon in the event of a terrorist attack or an accident.

So far: 50,000 Iraqis & 600 US Troops dead, plus the World is a much more dangerous place. Is this what we want ???

"What I am fighting here is a criminal government that has been involved in an illegal war. We have facilitated more than half the US troops that went to fight in an illegal war. Also they've torn our Constitution to shreds. They've not even allowed our Gardaí and security forces in Shannon to go on board these planes and find out what was in them. There is a huge arsenal of weapons flying over Shannon and there is no concern for the safety of the citizens in that area. Ireland has been complicit in an illegal war, against the will of the Irish people."
- Mary Kelly, 17 October 2003

Mary needs help from the people of Ireland to defend her case. The powers that be have imprisoned & beaten peaceful people and banned them from Co. Clare in an attempt to silence dissent, while inviting George W Bush and his private army to visit in June.

So what can you do to help? Practical support is needed
· Financial support & fundraising (gigs, raffles, table quizzes, etc).
· Public support & media coverage is essential. Write to newspapers, spread the word, etc.
· Lobby your elected representatives to address the issue of Mary's case and Ireland's continued complicity in an illegal war.
· Support local peace/resistance groups and oppose our greedy leaders' disregard for civil rights, human life and the planet.
-If you live outside the Republic of Ireland we urge you to protest at your country's Irish embassy on the dates of Mary's trial.

"I believe it is my duty as a responsible citizen to rid a civilian airport of belligerent US Military warplanes. Their presence is contrary to our constitution ... which is the highest law of our land. I am not willing to be an accomplice by facilitating these war machines with fuel." --Mary Kelly
