Documentary filmakers dedicate award to Indymedia Ireland

category national | arts and media | news report author Thursday October 30, 2003 13:49author by Aidan Report this post to the editors

Donnacha O Brín and Kim Bartlet, the makers of "Chavez Inside the Coup" yesterday dedicated their award for best documentary film at the ESB Irish Media awards, to media activists everywhere and Indymedia Ireland in particular.

Speaking as they accepted their first of two awards of the night, Donnacha spoke of the manipulation of events by mainstream media, and the importance of grassroot media activism, that during their time filming in Venezuela they relied on footage gathered by local video activists. Dedicated the award to IMC Ireland, he spoke of it as an exciting and important development for activists in Ireland.

if we can spend more time putting out the important stories and less time in ego-battles trolling and petty bickering.

Fair play to them, and to IMC

That documentary must have been the single most brilliant piece of film to be screened by RTE. It was well worth the license fee. Congratulations to the lads who made it. Does anybody know if its available for sale anywhere??

That's great to hear and will raise the awareness of the IMC.

I've seen the film and must say it's really excellent.

Excellent stuff indeed.

So much for Michael McDowells comment on radio one's Saturday view this year inviting the public to visit Indymedia to look at the "rubbish" that takes place here.

Though some of the stuff could be considered as rubbish i.e. Tim's point about "ego-battles trolling and petty bickering." - but the overall trust of the site (both here & worldwide), which McDowell was referring to, is excellent, important and exciting as Donnacha O' Brín states.

Even McDowell realises that the greatest weapon against the crypto-Marxist rubbish being written here is public exposure. Let the people see the lies you all write here and judge for themselves.

A 'directors cut' of the documentary will be introduced by Donnacha at Galway's Taibhdhearc on Thurs 13 November at 8 pm. The showing is organised for the benefit of GAAW.

Oh, and congratulations from GAAW to Kim, Donnacha and Dave on the most recent award

Just came across this:

Massive support needed for petition against Amnesty International censorship of Venezuelan documentary: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

This really lowers my respect for Amnesty International. I had heard rumblings about them being reformist, but this confirms it.

The text below is taken from the above URL:

We write to express our deepest support for public viewings and screenings of the award winning documentary film, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.” In light of the recent suspension of the film’s screening at the Amnesty International Film Festival to be held at the Pacific Cinematheque in Vancouver, British Columbia, from November 6-9, 2003, as a result of pressure from opposition groups in Venezuela and their international counterparts, we find it essential to declare our support for this revealing film, which evidences heinous human rights violations carried out during the April 2002 coup d’etat in Venezuela.
