Suddenly, green activists have started getting outraged at the billions wasted paying wind farms to switch off when it's too windy. The hypocrisy and chutzpah beggars belief, says Ben Pile.

Blockade updates

category dublin | bin tax / household tax / water tax | news report author Thursday October 02, 2003 18:58author by Bin there, dumped that Report this post to the editors

Reports of various blockades that I have received today. I know that others have happened elsewhere, so please add reports.

Fingal:

Fingal Council has been trying to avoid sending bin trucks into the strongest areas for the campaign, to avoid the kind of week long blockades that were a feature of the first fortnight of the struggle. Today the campaign showed its flexibility by organising the large scale blockading of the Swords depot.

If the trucks won't come to residents, residents will go to them.

The blockade lasted from 7 this morning until a little before 12 and covered all of its vehicle exits. Only one truck managed to get out of the depot in that period.

The police arrived down and started taking names but the protestors refused to move and the cops didn't push the issue.

The blockade had the effect of hugely disrupting todays bin collection in the Dublin North end of Fingal.

Over on the West end of the Fingal area, a bin truck was foolhardy enough to enter a working class estate and spent the afternoon in a blockade. I'm not sure if it is still there now or if the residents eventually let it go.

South Dublin:

Yesterday residents in Palmerstown found a single truck attempting to implement non-collection and quickly blockaded it.

More than 40 residents, mostly pensioners, held it all day and then overnight and into today. The last I heard (early this afternoon) it was still under blockade.

We aren't the council is. We want everybodys bins collected and are more the willing to allow a truck in that does this. The council don't want to collect everyones bins so take it up with them. If we win and the charge is abolished then you will benefit as well despite sitting on your hands while others fought for you.

Sell out by the looks of it.
(Are Impact members doing anything on the ground and harassing their head office, it seems to have had an effect on SIPTU.)

Fingal Manager welcomes union statement

Earlier, Fingal County Manager Willie Soffe welcomed a recent statement made by IMPACT trade union and in particular, their recognition that jobs and services are 'effectively dependent on the domestic charges regime'.

The local branch of IMPACT also condemned the actions of individuals, including elected representatives. The branch has called for an apology for remarks made about Council staff by
one of the leaders of the Anti-Bin Tax Campaign.

According to Mr Soffe, the support of the union has been crucial in implementing the waste charges, which are a requirement of EU and Irish law.

Wexford Town are at it as well now. Ohh yaa. Some Fianna Fail TD/Councillor was on the radio a while givin out about it - saying it would distract investment and cost jobs which the town needed. I severely doubt it.
