Chile 1973: the other 11th September

category antrim | miscellaneous | press release author Monday September 08, 2003 17:44author by Douglas Hamilton - Cuba Support Group - Belfastauthor email douglascuba at yahoo dot com Report this post to the editors

Latinoamérica Unida, Cineversity, One World Centre and
Cuba Support Group (Belfast) present the film:

CHILE 1973-2003: 30 Years Since the Coup

On 11th September 1973 the US led a brutal
military coup in Chile. The democratically elected
President Salvador Allende was among 3,000 people
killed on that day. Under the subsequent dictatorship of
General Pinochet thousands more were killed, tortured
or ‘disappeared’. To commemorate the 30th anniversary
of the coup there will be a screening of the
documentary:

Chile, Obstinate Memory
(Chile, la memoria obstinada)

in Spanish with English subtitles.
Director: Patricio Guzmán, Chile, 1997, 52 mins.

The film revisits Guzmán’s banned documentary ‘The
Battle of Chile’ to stress the importance that
historical realities are not forgotten, and that new
generations have access to the truth.

Date and time: Thursday 11th September 7.30pm

Venue: An Cultúrlann, 216 Falls Road, Belfast

All Welcome

I don't suppose this film mentions that Allende's daft Marxist policies had wrecked the economy and that he ought to have resigned long before a coup was necessary.

Chile was well rid of the likes of him.

I suppose people realise that seainin's daft spamming is aimed at wrecking IMC and that he ought to be deleted at every opportunity.

We would be well rid of the likes of him.

Yes I really think it is time that Seanin's bile be deleted. There is nothing independent about his comments, they are the typical rantings and ravings of the lunatic right. As for Allende, well I am sorry to say Seanin, but yet again you are better at daft insults than facts. Allende's current was just one of a number of groupings in the Popular Unity government which included communists etc, but his current were Social Democractic and affiliated to the Socialist International like the Irish Labour Party. Hardly Marxists, but is shows how reactionary the US was that event the modest proposals that he made were too much for the US. The economic ruin of Chile had more to do with the internal sabotage of the Chilean elites and the US that blocked Allende at every turn than his mismanagement, which is not to say he was a saint either. just to say that any economy put under the pressures that Chile was put under would fail.

As for being well rid of him. Seanin it would seem thinks that killing thousands is ok. This is the reason the editorial board should make a decision about him. You recently removed some rubbish about North Korea, Seanin's stuff is consistently offensive and just as nauseating as any praise for the despot of North Korea.

yeah, that's a bit a extreme even for the furthest right. Have to agree with Seamin about the economic policies which Allende implemented, under his populist program, but that sure didn't justify the American intervention, that contributed to that bloody coup.
Neither, come to think of it, did any link with "evil" leftist Fidel justify it.
Not all of us right-of-centrists are frothing at the mouth pinochets in waiting.

you cannot say that he destroyed the economy, because there is no such thing as an objective economy. The economy is run by ppl-capitalists- (they control the corporations) wich are usually rightwingers. Ofcourse they didnt support the Allende economicplan, and tried to work against it in everyway they could..wich hit hard on the economy. But that doesnt mean what he did was "bad". If the socialists would have won, Taken over the means of production and finished the revolution, they could have turned the economy around again.

Nothing is objectivelly "good" or "bad". It is all a matter of perspectives and intressts.

Go away your idealistic troll.

His economic policies ruined the country (go look at some good history books). That's why the military got rid of him. If everbody was delighted with him then no amount of US interfrednce could have removed him.

He was also one less ally for the Soviet Union so the removal of Allende was justified on all counts.

Why are people so ready to take a view without researching it themselves? And why do they only take it from one side. Just because someone is a socialist doesn't make them like all socialists. It doesn't automatically make them good or bad. And where is the point in knocking people's right to commemorate someone? I am not saying that you can't have an opinion without having read all there is to know, I am just make an informed opinion. That goes for elections and realising that censorship and propaganda are rife in this world (and country) too. So if you aren't sure read up on it. I guess everyone knows this is directed at the spooks more than anything.

He was not a disaster for the economy. But he was a threat to the rulingclass! THAT was what got him killed! And ofcourse not everybody loved him, ofcourse the capitalists hated him! That is what this is about--the classstruggle!

What is good for the workingclass is a threat to the rulingclass and the other way around. Nothing can change that. Study some history.
