Church leaders are too quick to condemn Tommy Robinson and the Unite the Kingdom march, says Chris Larkin. We don't know what Jesus would have made of our politics, but we can?t just assume he?d have been a Lib Dem voter.

Why war on Iraq - Bush says God told him to do it

category international | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Friday June 27, 2003 16:47author by Andrew Report this post to the editors

Todays issue of the Israeli liberal paper Haaretz carries an article on the 'Road map' based on leaked minutes of a meeting between Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Popular and Democratic Fronts. Whats scary is that Abbas tells them that Bush revealed the real reasons for war on Iraq to them, "God told me to strike .. at Saddam"!

The article doesn't actually make a big deal of this, it simple ends with the quote in the last paragraph as reproduced below

According to Abbas, immediately thereafter Bush
said: "God told me to strike at al Qaida and I
struck them, and then he instructed me to
strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am
determined to solve the problem in the Middle
East. If you help me I will act, and if not,
the elections will come and I will have to
focus on them."

I've broken up the URL of the article into 2 seperate lines as its so long. Someone tell me its a spoof.

From Maharishi's press conference, 2.4.03

QUESTION:
During conflicts people pray to God for victory. Both sides are convinced, God is on our side. God is universal, God is omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient as you said. So, whose side is God really on, when soldiers go to war?

MAHARISHI:
God is well aware of the hypocrisy of man. You can`t hide behind the name God and do wrong things. He has set the laws: As you sow, so shall you reap. As you sow, so shall you reap!

This is the kindness of God who has given man that freedom, what you like you can do. But what you do, you can not undo the result of your own doing. You have to bear the fruits of your doing.

As you sow, so shall you reap. It is a law. It is a universal law. God is not after each man, you do this and you don`t do that. No, no. God is God, the administrator of the galactic universe. He rules by one law. The law is: freedom to you, do what you want to do and you will get the result of what you do. That`s all.

You can befool yourself, but you can not befool the allmighty intelligence, the administrator of the universe, the light of God.

Now would you really be shocked Andrew if it turned out that, that be true? How many leaders in times of war have turned to God throughout history to find moral justification for their actions?

Was only reading recently there about "Stonewall" Jackson. A famous confederate general during the American civil war, historically reknowned for tactical genius. He was convinced his actions & victories were ordained by God.

Believeable, but scary.
