Happy Anniversary!

category louth | environment | news report author Saturday September 21, 2019 11:58author by Sean Crudden - Cooley Environmental and Health Group Report this post to the editors

Lifetime Pursuit

Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the first winter workshop organised by Cooley Environmental and Health Group. Next year's winter workshop is the 20th in a series dating back to the beginning of the Millennium. The workshop is slated for 25 January 2020 at 14:00 in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, Co. Louth. The title of the workshop provisionally is, "The Environment and Health 20 Years On."

Readers of indymedia may like to be reminded of the titles of all the winter workshops held since the start in 2001. The date for each workshop was usually the last Saturday in January starting at 14:00 and finishing at 17:30.

2019 : The Health and Environmental Impact of Brexit on the Local Area
2018 : Mental Health Care in Louth 1918-2018 and Beyond.
2017 : Housing And Homelessness: Falling Through The Cracks
2016 : Water - Guaranteeing A Safe Supply
2015 : Leadership and Participation: Community Development and the Demise of Local Government
2014 : Sustainable Local Development In The Local Area
2013 : Peers In Progress
2012 : Suicide
2011 : Obesity
2010 : Back To Basics - A Plan For Survival
2009 : Bullying
2008 : Anti-Social Behaviour
2007 : Urban Sprawl
2006 : Isolation
2005 : Organisation and Health
2004 : Fabrication, Machinery, Dundalk and The Environment
2003 : Personal Energy
2002 : Energy
2001 : Safety

Reports of these workshops in many cases were carried in indymedia.ie. Anyway the workshop in 2020 will be a sort of a review of the series so far. As regards health and the environment I think there is a scarcity of measurements or markers which would allow us to see what way things are going. In general we hear that human beings are living longer but I fear ill-health is more prevalent now than ever it was. As regards the environment I notice that butterflies have become less common in the local environment and I think there were fewer swallows than usual this year. I think the sea shore around Dundalk Bay is less salubrious than it was, but this is only a personal opinion.
