If Lucy Connolly was jailed for stirring up racial hatred, the same must go for BBC Director General Tim Davie, says Nick Rendell. Davie personally took the decision to broadcast Bob Vylan's antisemitic chant to millions.

Even if you're a Londoner, you probably didn?t notice that June 21st-29th was 'London Climate Action Week'. It was all talk, says Ben Pile ? exceptionally dull talk, bankrolled by the usual Green Blob billionaires.

Protest Against Racist Attacks & Oppose Racism

category dublin | anti-capitalism | event notice author Wednesday November 13, 2013 12:16author by Turing Report this post to the editors

Protest Against Racist Attacks & Oppose Racism
Saturday 16 November at 2:00 pm. Assemble at the Front of Tallaght Hospital

The Anti Austerity Alliance - Dub S.W has initiated a protest this Saturday at 2PM to oppose recent racist attacks in Tallaght, to fight racism, and to mobilise the community to show their opposition to these incidents.

Recently, a disgusting attack took place on a Halal shop in Cookstown Industrial estate which saw the shop ransacked and sprayed with racist graffiti. There have been some other attacks and incidents over the recent period.

We are calling on all groups, organisations, community groups and residents to support and attend the protest.

Below is a press statement which was issued:

Anti – Austerity Alliance Condemns recent spate of Racist Attacks

- AAA calls for community protest against Racism & in solidarity with victims this Saturday 2PM at Tallaght Hospital

The Anti-Austerity Alliance, an activist based campaign group, has condemned the recent spate of racist incidents in Tallaght and has called on the community to come out in a protest against racism and in solidarity with the victims:

Eddie Eriksson, commented: “The recent attack on the Halal shop, and a reported attack on a Filipino man which left him hospitalised are disgusting incidents which show the threat which racism can pose if it is not checked.

“Racism is a way to attempt to divide people rather than unite them. With the current austerity measures which are being imposed ordinary people’s living standards are being destroyed and people look for someone to blame. It is in this environment that racist ideas can get an echo. Rather than blaming someone with a different skin colour or religion, people should look to blame the government, the bankers and the bondholders who are responsible for this crisis.

Phil Foster, an Anti Austerity campaigner added,
“We are organising a protest against these racist attacks and in solidarity with the victims this Saturday. We are asking people to come out to support the protest to send a clear message that our communities reject racism and these attacks, and to get involved in the AAA which aims to unite people to fight against austerity.”

Maybe it would have been a better idea to contact and organise alongside/behind migrant-led anti-racist groups. It's a nice gesture to organise this, but it seems like your press release (with name of campaigner(s) attached!) is the crux of the story. It would have been a more mature move to encourage Roma and African migrant groups to take the lead here, let them speak and support their decision on what to do, as they are the one's who personally understand the issues and they exist primarily to combat/oppose racism.
