Press release
On the occasion of May Day—International Workers’ Day—we publicity launch a united statement signed by fifteen communist parties from throughout the European Union as a common position against the Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union and the revised Treaty on the European Stability Mechanism (ESM).
All the parties call upon workers throughout the European Union to mobilise and to resist these treaties and the anti-people policies of the European Union and their national allies.
All signatories expressed their solidarity with Irish workers and supported the call for a No vote by the Irish people in the referendum on 31 May.
Eugene Mc Cartan
General Secretary
Joint statement issued by communist parties from across the European Union calling for maximum opposition to the Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union and the revised Treaty on the European Stability Mechanism (ESM)
The European Union and the ruling classes of the member states are determined to make working people pay a very heavy price for the deepening crisis of the system.
We Communist and Workers' parties of the member states of the European Union call on workers across the EU to resist and oppose the adoption of the Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union and the revised Treaty on the European Stability Mechanism (ESM).
These two treaties would make “Eurozone” member states and practically all other countries signing these agreements into permanent regimes of economic austerity involving deeper and deeper cuts in public expenditure, rises in indirect taxes, reductions in wages, sustained liberalisation of markets and privatisation of public enterprises, services and vital national assets.
The strategy is to have low wages, low public spending, mass poverty and workers having few rights. The treaties are designed to make these measures into a permanent feature of the EU that are impossible to reverse.
The impact of these treaties will not be confined to the member states of the Eurozone. They will provide the bench-mark for further attacks on workers' rights and conditions across the whole of the EU. The ruling classes have declared open warfare on workers in a generalised offensive.
These treaties are designed to neutralise the potential of national working class formations to influence or change national economic and social policy. They, along with previous treaties, are about blocking any avenues for the working class to defend itself or to promote policies of social progress and a socialist alternative.
They will make austerity permanent by continuous external interference of EU institutions in the affairs of member states in relation to economic and social policy, in the interests of monopoly capitalism.
In this they have the active collaboration of the ruling class and its political representatives in each country. These treaties will further negate and deeply undermine national and sovereign rights.
Any policies that the ruling classes across the European Union can deliver will inevitably make the people pay for this crisis of capitalism. Promoting the interests of the working class is only possible by confronting and breaking with this destructive system.
We, Communist and Workers' Parties value and salute the mass response from the workers and other social strata affected by the measures and policies of big capital, in Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Italy and call upon workers and their trade unions, and people's mass organisations, to resist these renewed attacks and to mobilise and assert a working class response to the crisis of state monopoly capitalism.
In the immediate battles of today our parties will present the vision of Socialism as the answer to the crisis of the capitalist system.

D’eisigh páirtithe cumannacha an Aontais Eorpaigh an comh-ráiteas seo a leanas ina n-éilítear an cur is tréine arbh fhéidir in éadan an Chonradh um Sheasmhacht, Comhordú agus Rialachas san Aontas Eacnamaíoch agus Monatarach agus an leasú don Chonradh um Mheicníocht Eorpach Seasmhachta (MES)
Tá an tAontas Eorpach agus aicmí ceannais na mballstát meáite ar thabhairt ar oibrithe íocadh go daor as géarchéim fhástach an chórais.
Iarrann muide, páirtithe Cumannacha agus Oibrithe bhallstát an Aontais Eorpaigh, ar oibrithe an AE streachailt i gcoinne glacadh leis an gConradh um Sheasmhacht, Comhordú agus Rialachas san Aontas Eacnamaíoch agus Monatarach agus an leasú don Chonradh um Meicníocht Eorpach Seasmhachta (MES).
Bhunódh an dá chonradh seo buanchóras déine i mballstáit an “Eoraréigiúin” agus sna tíortha uilig, beagnach, a chloífeadh leis; ní bheadh de thoradh orthu ach cur le ciorruithe ar chaiteachas poiblí, arduithe ar chánacha indíreacha, laghdaithe ar thuarastail, liobrálú leanúnach ar mhargaí agus príobháidiú ar fhiontair phoiblí, ar sheirbhísí agus ar acmhainní riachtanacha náisiúnta.
Aidhm na straitéise seo: tuarastail ísle, caiteachas íseal poiblí, bochtanas forleathan, oibrithe ar bheagán cearta. Tá na conarthaí seo dréachtaithe le go mbeadh na céimeanna seo ina mbuanchuid den AE nach bhfeadfaí a chealú feasta.
Ní ballstáit an Eoraréigiúin amháin a bheadh thíos leis na conarthaí seo. Ba sprioc iad do ionsaithe breise ar chearta is ar choinníollacha oibrithe an AE uilig. Tá cogaíocht iomlán á fógairt ag na haicmí ceannais ar oibrithe leis an ollionsaí seo.
Cumadh na conarthaí seo le tionchar eagraíochtaí náisiúnta na haicme oibre ar pholasaithe eacnamaíocha agus sóisialta náisiúnta a neodrú. Maille le conarthaí atá i bhfeidhm cheana féin, féachann siad le cosc a chur ar chumas an lucht oibre é féin a chosaint nó polasaithe a chuirfeadh forás sóisialta nó an rogha sóisialach chun cinn.
Daingneoidh siad déine trí ladar an AE a chur go leanúnach i ngnaithe na mballstát bainteach le polasaithe eacnamaíocha agus sóisialta le leas an ghaimbíneachais mhonaplachta a dhéanamh.
Chuige seo, tá aicme ceannais chuile thír is a gcuid ionadaithe polaitiúla, ag obair le chéile. Cuirfidh na conarthaí seo le cealú agus le treascairt cearta atá bunaithe ar fhlaithiúnas náisiúnta.
Cuirimidne, Páirtithe na gCumannach is na nOibrithe, ard-luach ar, agus fáilte roimh, fhreagairt mhór na n-oibrithe is na sraitheanna sóisialta eile atá thíos le beartais agus polasaithe an ghaimbíneachais mhóir sa nGréig, in Éirinn, sa bPortaingéil, sa Spáinn agus san Iodáil. Iarrann muid ar oibrithe gona gceardchumainn is ar eagraíochtaí leathana na hionsaithe athnuaite seo a throid is slógadh a dhéanamh le freagairt aicme na n-oibrithe do ghéarchéim an ghaimbíneachais mhonaplachta a fhógairt.
I gcathanna reatha an lae inniu, beidh fís an tSóisialachais mar fhreagra ag na páirtithe seo againne ar ghéarchéim chóras an ghaimbíneachais.

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4 5 6This is all very interesting but will any political party especially those who say they are on the left address the real issues here. The first issue is the Euro. It has caused devastation since its introduction. It is costing us hundreds of billions to prop it up and it is wasted money because it is not going to work. It is not possible to save the Euro but the politicians wont admit they got it wrong on the euro.
The second issue that the so called left in Ireland has failed to address is the issue of default. Why are the left afraid of this issue that dare not raise its name. The left in Iceland is obviously made of sterner stuff that Irish lefties because they had no problem supporting the default in Iceland.
perhaps because most of the left in Ireland are there to channel and manage discontent, not to bring real revolutionary change.
They'll go on a "two minute hate" safety valve march at the drop of a hat but They won't get behind real steps that might derail the current gravy train of wages and profit at the top. A maximum wage for example, or printing our own currency to be circulated nationally in parallel to the euro but not traded on the forex.
There just seem to be no new creative ideas on the left that move with the times and adapt to modern economic ideas of money etc.
Maybe some of them have been co-opted by capitalism?
They make speeches about pie in the sky complete abolition of capitalism utopia that cannot be realised but ignore more definite concrete subversive steps and actions that could change the system quite a bit right now in the shorter term and for the longer term good.
They allow framing of debate so an understanding of fiat money itself and how it works is left out, leaving us at the mercy of the euro banksters to be made indentured slaves indefinitely
If so then this is a real problem for those of us who want a real change now and aren't prepared to wait forever for global capitalist control structures to disappear of their own volition for it to happen
Both economyst and Viking are correct about the dismal state of the left in Ireland. They are in real danger of losing the referendum to the yes side, because they are afraid to point out that the Euro has been a total disaster since it was imposed by the political classes on the people of every country in the Eu except the clever Scandinavian countries and Great Britain who has the common sense to keep their own currencies. The left in Ireland has become very cautious and timid in their demands since they formed the ULA and went 'parliamentarian' and respectable. This is why they are scared to take on the Euro or to call for a default.
These guys the communists used to be radical back in the day. But now they cant bring themselves to call for a default to capitalist banks and bondholders! As Bob Dylan said the times are a changin....
Communism is Nineteenth Century nonsense .
Dead and gone..
..stating Socrates is all Greek to me....cos I never read him.
And then capitalism is a primitive dog-eat-dog dogma of might is right that Marx tried to rationally analyse. He may have missed a few notes, but his commentary remains relevant, and his predictions continue to manifest.
Crisis of capitalism??Couldn't happen?
