European MEPs, scientists, and NGOs have accused the European Commission of exceeding its powers in a sinister move to fast-track the approval of more GM crops for cultivation in the EU. The GM-free Ireland Network has written to Irish MEPs requesting the European Parliament to take urgent action to stop the Commission from implementing this undemocratic move before José Manuel Barroso signs the new regulations into law. GM-free Ireland co-ordinator Michael O’Callaghan said “Cultivation of any GM crops on the island of Ireland (such as the antibiotic-resistant industrial-starch-producing GM potato approved yesterday by the Commission) would destroy Ireland’s untapped economic potential to secure the safest, most credible GM-free food brand in the EU. We can’t allow the Commission to take this from us.” read full story / add a comment

Basque parents seek support from the authorities for their sons and daughters abused and tortured by Spanish police. The mothers and fathers of the 34 young people snatched during the massive Spanish police operation against Basque youth last November have transformed their agony into into energetic campaigning. Although they have no connection to one anohter other than their shared anguish, they have joined their voices, going from door to door of the authorities to tell the story of their hardship. Included in the allegations of Spanish police torture of the 34 youth are those of special sexual humiliation and threats against the 14 young women among them. They ask for only one thing: the protection of the authorities so that no more families have to endure what they did. read full story / add a comment

The Galway Alliance Against War will mark International Women’s Day on Friday evening with a fundraiser for women organisations in Afghanistan, whose members risk life and limb on a daily basis to offer young girls an education. It has to be done in secret, as the ruling warlords, like the Taliban, oppose schools for girls. So, GAAW will hold a fundraiser for these women groups in Woodquay’s Rowing Club on Friday 5th March starting at 9pm. Admission to this ceili/disco is only €5.
