Governments, campaigners and survivors of cluster bombs from around the world are meeting in New Zealand this week to decide what a treaty banning cluster bombs will include. It is the most significant disarmament conference the New Zealand government has ever hosted and will result in a draft treaty text that countries will agree to negotiate in Dublin, from 19-30 May 2008. Some governments are trying to weaken a treaty by calling for exemptions based on dubious technical fixes. The Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC) are calling for the strongest possible ban on cluster bombs. read full story / add a comment

Is the care of the earth a burning question for people of faith? Should it be? Does the Christian gospel speak to the crisis of climate change? Does loving God and ones neighbour call also for love and reverence of planet earth? Are Christians too heavenly minded to see the dangers threatening the beauty and balance of God’s creation? read full story / add a comment

‘Winter Soldier’ (1972) is a film that has suffered from de facto censorship for most of its thirty six years. Its recent screening as part of the ‘War at Home’ category in the Berlinale Film Festival affected people in Berlin’s Filmpalast theatre as it did when first screened in the early seventies. It is harrowing viewing. Perhaps never before have words, simple spoken words, had such an affect on a society as this film did in the United States of America in 1972. This was because of the undeniable integrity of the U.S. servicemen articulating the extent of the genocidal operating procedure of the U.S. Armed Forces in Vietnam. It has since effectively been erased from the public memory. In the eighties and nineties the era of the Vietnam War underwent a full-scale reconstruction with the likes of Hollywood facelifts of the Vietnam veteran with such films as ‘Rambo’, ‘Hamburger Hill’ and ‘Full Metal Jacket’. Many people in Berlin were moved by the film as it is once again so relevant to all of us.

While many Indymedia readers are probably not fans of any of the prospective presidential candidates in the US, I thought this analysis of the coverage was quite interesting and worth putting up. While I don't agree with all the points made, it does provide some interesting and disturbing commentary on the media coverage, and the way in which feminisation of the candidates is seen as a way of degrading them (particularly in relation to Clinton, of course). While I'm not her greatest fan, I do think some of the points made here and the examples given show how deep the distrust of female leadership still goes in Western society. Obama has faced some ethnocentric bias too, but it seems his charisma and gender are saving him from the worst of it. read full story / add a comment
