Only IFUT and TUI proposed doing anything about Public Sector Pension Cuts. INTO and INMO mentioned the cuts in statements. There was no mention of the cuts on Websites of the following bodies: ICTU, SIPTU, ASTI, CPSU, PSEU, IMPACT. Union responses are pasted below.

While INTO, ASTI, TUI are running a campaign against the pension rip-off of new public servants announced in the Budget, there is no mention of this issue by the silent unions above. It is believed that ICTU has refused to oppose the new “pension Scheme” which is in effect a tax because the individual gets less out than was contributed (Trident Report to Teaching Unions). There is no proposal by any union to do anything about the pay cut for new entrants. This decision breaches a whole range of existing industrial relations agreements and agreed circular letters. read full story / add a comment

The latest round of diplomatic cables released by wikileaks candidly reveals the Irish government's attitudes towards the use of Shannon airport by the US military. No great surprise that the Irish government co-operated with military flights to Iraq for a diplomatic back scratch and to boost the Shannon economy. The ploughshares action and acquittal case gets a couple of mentions.

* €1 Million a year earners will be 6 per cent better off

* Lowest paid will take 11 per cent cut

The UNITE trade union has unearthed detail from the budget published yesterday which shows that landlords, shareholders or self employed and company directors who earn €1 million a year will incredibly be six per cent better off after changes to tax breaks and the replacement of the income and health levies with a Universal Social Charge that is “anything but social in its impact on those at the opposite extremes of Irish society”. read full story / add a comment
