'Populists' like Donald Trump and Nigel Farage are a "threat to democracy", chant the mainstream media. In fact, they are just reminding our politicians what they are supposed to be doing, says Prof James Alexander.

Ógra Shinn Féin protested at Belfast City Hall on Friday 26 June opposing the move by the City Council to fly the British army flag as part of ‘armed forces day.’

The republican youth group, alongside Sinn Féin activists, joined in solidarity with RFJ (Relatives for Justice) and the victims of British state murder and collusion to highlight their opposition to the controversial decision.

While the Belfast City Hall gates where adorned with large black ribbons, the protesters held banners with anti collusion and state murder slogans on them. The assembled crowd was addressed by the RFJ director Mark Thompson, and Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly before 70 black balloons where released into the air representing all the young people who were murdered by the British Army.

Although for many readers it might seem in poor taste to publish words from either the UVF or Red Hand Comando on this website- it may also be understood as serving an important archive role. The IRA issued its order to decommission and abandon arms on the 28th of July 2005.

However it has not been until today an arguably older militia tendency & organisation (if in name only on) our island, the UVF and a smaller but no less murderous group "the Red Hand Comando" issued an equivalent order to their membership.

international / worker & community struggles and protests / press release Friday June 26, 2009 16:47 by Liz Chinchen
Workers from across London will be giving up their lunch hour today (Friday) to attend a protest outside the Iranian Embassy against its Government's harsh treatment of trade unionists, something which is feared will get even worse in the wake of the current street demonstrations.

Long before the current crackdown against Iranians disputing the recent presidential election result, the Government had been harassing and intimidating trade unionists. In Iran members of independent trade unions are frequently beaten up or thrown into prison. And there are concerns that attacks on trade unionists will increase as protesters look for other ways of demonstrating against the regime by taking part in strikes and other work-related protests read full story / add a comment

Not one single word of the Lisbon Treaty will be altered by these guarantees, which is why they do not need to be ratified by the National Parliaments of the 27 Member States. The so called ‘legal guarantees’ are nothing more than an interpretation by EU Heads of State as to what they think the Lisbon Treaty means. However, if the Lisbon Treaty comes into force, it will be the EU Court of Justice in Luxembourg which will interpret Lisbon. The EU Court is the only body authorised under the European Treaties to interpret the Treaties themselves and decide how they should be applied. The political decision and agreement of a particular group of EU Prime Ministers and Presidents, which is what we are being presented with, cannot and will not decide what Lisbon means. read full story / add a comment

Carers and their loved ones who receive roll-over respite care in Cherryorchard Hospital have been informed by the HSE that the newly refurbished Beech Unit at Cherryorchard Hospital is to close indefintely.

The management at the hospital have told Councillor Brid Smith that the closure of the Beech is due to staff shortages for the Summer months. However, they could not give any guarantees as to when it will reopen.

Nurses who are taking annual leave and maternity leave are not being replaced. The HSE embargo on recruitment is once again seriously hurting patients receiving respite care and their families. read full story / add a comment

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has called for the international community to act to protect journalists reporting from Iran where the regime has turned its fire on local and foreign media accusing them of stirring up trouble in the wake of disputed elections.

"There are two issues we are concerned about," said Aidan White, IFJ General Secretary . "The physical safety of our colleagues and the threat to democracy if the government succeeds in using the media blackout and intimidation of journalists to control the information space."

Today we are witnessing the ordinary people of Iran finally having had enough with the Ayatollahs and the Guardian Council.
It is our duty if we value freedom and democracy to support them.

I call on all who support and sympathise with them to make their voice heard and protest at the Iranian Embassy all this weekend.
