More evidence of a rapid increase in ice melt: Studies showed glaciers have lost volume on average "10 to 100 times faster" in the last 30 years. Full text at url below. Melting mountain glaciers are making sea levels rise faster now than at any time in the last 350 years, according to new research. Universities at Aberystwyth, Exeter and Stockholm looked at longer timescales than usual for their study. They mapped changes in 270 of the largest glaciers between Chile and Argentina since the "Little Ice Age". Studies showed glaciers have lost volume on average "10 to 100 times faster" in the last 30 years. The rapid melt rate is linked to their contribution to global sea level. read full story / add a comment

As was the case with Gulf War 1, more serious resistance to the present wars on Afghanistan and Iraq has come from within the military in the United States & Britain than from the anti-war movements in civil society. A culture of solidarity is not evident in either countries anti-war movements. Military resisters often end up isolated and demoralised by anti-war movements that incite them to resist and then abandons them! Gerry Downing of 'Socialist Fight' believes the anti-Gaddafi rebellion is totally reactionary. This article is published in the Weekly Worker but does not reflect the views of the CPGB. Eddie Ford’s article ‘Imperialism out, down with the Gaddafi regime’, makes a number of serious political errors and omissions (Weekly Worker March 24). The most important ones are to fail to take into account: (1) Libya’s history of struggle against colonialism and imperialism; (2) the tribal nature of its society; (3) the nature of the leadership of the Libyan rebels; (4) the role of the working class in the struggle; (5) the role of al-Qa’eda in Libya; and (6) to light-mindedly assume that this was just a continuation of the ‘Arab revolution’ or ‘Arab spring’ begun in Tunisia and then developed in Egypt and throughout the region. When we think of American contractors in times of war we think of recent conflicts. Private contractors are not new, but the recent phenomenon regarding the extent to which private contractors are currently utilized is well known. There are famous/ infamous companies, depending on which is being discussed, though it seems many of the big names all have scandal attached to them. However, they all seem to maintain their lucrative US taxpayer funded contracts, funded most often unknowingly by people from my country the USA. read full story / add a comment

Peter Manson asked Mohammad Hamama, a prominent RS member, about the prospects for the working class movement in Egypt and beyond. Full text at url below. How would you describe the current situation in Egypt? This is an era of revolution. The toppling of Mubarak was just the start. We need to overthrow the regime, but Mubarak was just its head. There are a lot of mini-Mubaraks all over Egypt: in every sector, every apparatus and every institution. Government ministers and private sector bosses - they are all corrupt and they all make up the regime, the regime we want to topple. But things are getting very tough. The idea that the revolution ended when Mubarak fell is really wrong. The revolution is only just starting. The army generals are serving their own interests and they will try to save whatever they can of the old order. The workers must take the lead now - this is their moment. The movement must spread all over Egypt. We need to turn every corner of the country into Tahrir Square. We need to topple every single Mubarak. We need far more than political reforms. We need very radical social reforms relating to how wealth is distributed. The companies privatised over the last 30 years need to be nationalised again in order to undermine the generals. read full story / add a comment

Moshé Machover is an Israeli Socialist and Anti Zionist. He addressed addressed last weekend's CPGB aggregate on the defeat of the Libyan revolution, Al-Jazeera, and the goal of Arab unity. Full text at the link. Why did they go for Libya and not other places? For me there are three main reasons. Firstly, there is the question of oil. Do not underestimate this factor. Of course, the quantity of oil Libya offers is next to nothing in comparison to Saudi Arabia, but it is its quality which makes them interested in it. The ongoing Fukushima nuclear crisis has raised numerous concerns, the candor of pronouncements regarding the reality of circumstances being one of them. As many wonder what the future will hold, the events reported in this article suggest some possible conclusions, the facts being less than reassuring. Full text and links to article's source documents only available on Common Dreams at url below. As radiation counts elevate in Japan, news of nuclear contamination spreading across a widening spectrum of life and its necessities, official pronouncements continue to play down events’ gravity. While some have questioned whether this is being pursued to promote calm, or perhaps the nuclear industry, the result has left many either skeptical of official claims or simply reassured by them. Shatter condemns criticisms of judiciary in wake of tribunal The Justice Minister Alan Shatter has hit out at what he has called "intemperate attacks" on the judiciary. Alan Shatter's released a statement this evening, condemning a number of comments made in the wake of the Moriarty report published earlier this week, which he said were "intended to bring the judiciary into disrepute and to undermine public confidence in the administration of justice." Minister Shatter said the statements which he claimed " endanger public confidence" in the judiciary and the courts, are "entirely unacceptable and are to be deplored". Both former Minister Michael Lowry and Businessman Denis O'Brien have been critical of Mr. Justice Michael Moriarty in the wake of the report. I'm posting here, a very interesting article by Michael Albert of Z Space/Z Mag in which he looks at the idea of differences of opinion on the left and teases out the issues of should we aim to be "right" (as in correct) - which we should, but also if we have a difference of opinion with others or other groups on the left, should we have a "split" or disregard their past opinions also? And then, if it turns out the that other person/group on the left was correct in their analysis and action(s), should we be bitter that we weren't or should we be thankful that those who were right won out? Following his recent election to the Irish Parliament Joe Higgins the Socialist Party / CWI MEP for Dublin was obliged to announce his replacement as MEP from the election substitute list. Today the Socialist Party announced that Paul Murphy will be the new Socialist Party / CWI MEP to take over from Joe Higgins. Parents died leaving Family home intestate. Mick, one of the sons took out a High Court administration form and sold the family without consulting with his brother and four sisters. The other son John took him to court and won the case. It was discovered in court that Mick had defrauded the form in order to sell the home. The case ended up in the Circuit Court and the High Court but both courts decided that John was right to bring the case and he was awarded his share of the family home proceeds plus costs. read full story / add a comment

The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are losing mass at an accelerating pace, according to a new NASA-funded satellite study.
