A Swiss girl has been been taken into care because her parents stopped her taking puberty blockers, breaching a ban on conversion therapy. Is this what Labour means by a "full, trans-inclusive ban on conversion practices"?

The West's headlong rush to jettison fossil fuels and hit 'Net Zero' CO2 emissions is impoverishing us while enriching China, which is ramping up its coal-fired industry to sell us all the 'green' technology.

This video highlights just fifty of the many Fianna Fail scandals that have hit the headlines since Bertie Ahern became Party Leader in December 1994. This sheer volume of continuous scandals - some serious, some more trivial - has now become almost helpful to Fianna Fail, because we have now become so desensitised to scandals that we just accept them as the normal state of affairs. read full story / add a comment

An interesting review:of Treacherous Alliance – the secret dealings of Israel, Iran and the United States By Trita Parsi. Yale University Press, New Haven. 2007 by Jim Miles.

As the prospects of a limited ‘strike’ or a full out attack on Iran become more and more familiar in the media, and as the end date for the Bush-Cheney regime in the United States draws ever nearer to its close, a better understanding of the tripartite relationship between Iran, Israel, and the U.S. requires a strong presentation of the underlying so far verbal conflict between the three governments. Trita Parsi succeeds in this goal in Treacherous Alliance, in which he discusses the relationship between the three. read full story / add a comment

" Yet we have an understanding with the weather:
Whenever squalls end and sun returns with
Friendly fire, we would forgive it anything"

(From 'Skywriting' )

'Reality Check' was launched on the Fourth of September 2007 in the Royal College of Surgeons
and it was nice to see the luminaries and the establishment having to queue and snake through
the room to get their copy signed (!)

The book is in two sections, the first 17 short poems and series ;and the second is a beautiful
long poem called 'Skywriting' which is all about light and the sun threading his way over
our Irish map.

An International week in solidarity with Iranian Workers is being organised for November 24-30, 2007. This action is support of the Iranian People and against the Capitalist Iranian Government but is also against the US Capitalist Warmongers.

The recent wave of oppression against activists of workers' organizations in Iran and other social movements is not a new incident but a routine practice of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI). This wave of repression nevertheless has caused the radicalization and development of class-based labour protests. These conditions have jeopardized the entirety of Islamic Republic of Iran. Social and economic crises are rapidly escalating. It is a proven fact that the promises of the capitalist regime of Iran are false and that this regime has brought nothing but the continuous oppression of working people. This regime has caused ever-increasing poverty and misery for working class. read full story / add a comment

The Sixteen Day Campaign for stopping Violence Against Women is set for the 25th November
to the Tenth of December 2007. Lip Service and Tokenism abound here, but it is a period
that internationally women address Safety, Violence, Rape, Women's Aid and of course, how
our divided societies create a wealth class of pseudo-feminism and an opposing class
of community activism based wholly in gendered stereo-typing and money, or to be politically
correct about it how we make our daughters second class citizens by ignoring their Basic Rights.

'Particiaptory democracy' is not something we have heard much of from Labour over the last decade or two. Interesting therefore that the term should fetch up in arch pragmatist and moderniser Fergus Finlay's Irish Examiner column today. Delaram Ali, a Womens rights activist has been sentenced to be flogged and to serve 34 months in prison. Her "crime: demonstrating for womens Rights.

Delaram Ali has been told to present herself to court in order to start serving a prison sentence which has not formally been conveyed to her. She has been told that if she does not attend court by 10 November, she will be arrested.

There is also a risk that she will be flogged. If she is detained, Amnesty International would consider her to be a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for the peaceful exercise of her right to freedom of expression and association for her activities promoting women’s rights in Iran. The Head of the Judiciary has the power to suspend Delaram Ali’s sentence and to order a reinvestigation of the case. read full story / add a comment
