Singer David Gray has spoken out and condemned US interrogators for playing loud music which includes one of his own tracks as a form of "torture". "Only the novelty aspect of this story gets it noticed... Guantanamo greatest hits," he said.

"What we're talking about here is people in a darkened room, physically inhibited by handcuffs, bags over their heads and music blaring at them." That is nothing but torture." "It doesn't matter what the music is - it could be Tchaikovsky's finest or it could be Barney the Dinosaur." "It really doesn't matter, it's going to drive you completely nuts." read full story / add a comment

Four years ago on July 7th 2004 at 09:47 an explosion occurred on a No. 30 double-decker bus in Tavistock Square, London.

13 people died.

A shudder of terror went through all those who realised that a bus bomb could not be prevented, like perhaps a metro or subway bomb, with metal detectors or sniffer dogs that terror was compounded by the death and casualty figures in comparison to the total of 39 deaths for 3 rush hour underground trains. It was amazing anyone could survive. One did and has written a book which Amazon withdrew from distribution in March 2008.

The visit by US Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Admiral Mike Mullen to Israel yesterday is one more indication that the two countries are actively discussing a military strike on Iran. Mullen’s trip followed news that the Israeli air force carried out a major exercise earlier this month involving 100 fighter jets, backed by midair fuel tankers and rescue helicopters, flying some 1,500 kilometres westward over the Mediterranean Sea—roughly the same distance as eastward from Israel to Iran’s nuclear facilities. read full story / add a comment

The MEK who, according to a France24 journalist, usually pay Afghani 'extras' by the day to boost numbers, bussed in Polish students, who were given a trip to Paris for €6, in order that they would attend the MEK propaganda rally. Some students went inside while others enjoyed lying around in Paris. A report published by Human Rights Watch denounced the MEK for poor treatment of dissident members in its camps in Iraq. read full story / add a comment

Zimbabweans today flocked to the polls. Not to exercise a choice - for there was none. But to make damn sure that after the secret ballot they had a bloody red finger.

No bloody red finger tonight means no democratic duty done today.

When the flock is shepherded by wolves it seems it prefers a bloody red finger to whatever else is on offer. Tomorrow Dr Richard Mugabe will be sworn in as President of Zimbabe. As one of the most articulate and poshest voices in African post-colonial history he will not feel the need to say fuck when he is sworn in. He will not besmirch democracy by cursing during his oath. read full story / add a comment

The women’s movement in Iran has become the subject of many claims and counter-claims over the last few years. "The cover story of the Drunken Captain serves the oil industry well. It falsely presents America's greatest environmental disaster as a tale of human frailty, a one-time accident. But broken radar, missing equipment, phantom spill teams, faked tests -- the profit-driven disregard of the law -- made the spill an inevitability, not an accident."

Palast has followed this story for years. He was part of the team that did the research to launch the locals’ court case for damages against the Esso oil corporation for poisoning for thousands of years their coastline, beaches, seas and livelihoods.

And those lovely people in the Irish Times this week had Krauthammer, that social Darwinist looper, with an article entitled: Drilling in the Arctic - Good the Economy & Good for the Environment.

But it’s like the nuclear lovin’ (Protocol 12), for-profit energy market fans and promoters of the neoliberalist Lisbon Treaty - Friends of the Earth Ireland, say, it’s about keeping the pressure on .... ha! ha! ha! read full story / add a comment

We bring to the attention of our readers David DeBatto's scenario as to what might occur if one of the several contingency plans to attack Iran, with the participation of Israel and NATO, were to be carried out. While one may disagree with certain elements of detail of the author's text, the thrust of this analysis must be taken seriously.

Activist Hana Abdi is appealing a five-year prison sentence, while Ronak Safarzadeh is on trial on charges that could lead to a death sentence. Human Rights Watch urges Iranian authorities to ensure fair and open court proceedings for both women.
