The following is an interview with Raymond Deane, an Irish composer, author and former chairperson of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC). He has been a remarkably active member of the IPSC for years, he is also a very knowledgable person on the Middle East conflict and is a committed supporter of the Botcott Campaign in Ireland. The man the Newsletter calls “the respected journalist Henry McDonald,” the Newsletter's Ireland correspondent - sorry, mistake, the Guardian's Ireland correspondent - calls students who drank a lot on St Patrick's Day 'Catholic/nationalist'. What's more, they are 'rural', shock horror. Ticks all the prejudicial boxes - cannot be allowed.

But how does Henry know?

It's easy: 'judging from the Gaelic football and Glasgow Celtic shirts, as well as the names of those the PSNI decided to arrest'.

Would the Guardian publish this type of drivel about the Notting Hill carnival? No because in that case it would be racist. In this case it is merely sectarian, while claiming not to be. read full story / add a comment

Support the Women, Workers and Students!

The level of repression against radical activists and voices of opposition to the Islamic Republic in Iran has increased in the recent weeks. Activists from the students’, women’s and workers’ movements, as well as those from national and religious minorities, have all suffered violent attacks and arrests. Eight labour activists from the Haft Tapeh sugarcane factory union in southern Iran have been detained by the intelligence ministry, including Ali Nejati, the president of the board of directors of the Haft Tapeh Sugar Cane Company Workers’ Syndicate, who was arrested on March 8. read full story / add a comment

Because of what is perceived to be at stake (a peace process which is widely acknowledged to have brought, rather than bringing, to an end an internecine conflict of extraordinary savagery and duration) - it is not surprising that the killing of 2 British army soldiers in an attack which also 2 civilian pizza delivery employees threatened - has moved from breaking newswires to front page position across not only European and US media but globally.

Already there are over 200 news reports in Spanish langauge media across the South American continent with some titles and news agencies also providing background sections on "The Troubles" and linking to the condemnatory statement this afternoon by Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams. read full story / add a comment
