Yesterday afternoon Gardai violently removed protesters attempting to stop the illegal instalment of a Shell portacabin on the land of publican Paddy McGrath near Pollathomais, Co Mayo. This afternoon a letter from Mr McGrath's solicitors giving persons responsible for the cabin until 2pm to move it, advising that the failure to do so would result in an injunction. Terence Wheelock was taken into custody on the 2nd of June 2005. The twenty year old man left Store Street station in a coma never to recover from the injuries that he received there and died in September 2005. His family is still waiting for an adequate explanation for what happened on that day in Store Street. The Gardai claim that Terence’s injuries were sustained while attempting suicide but the Wheelock family have disputed this and have launched a high profile campaign for an independent inquiry into Terence Wheelock’s death. read full story / add a comment

Belfast: Protesters show support for Anti-War activists arrested for protesting the presence of British PM Tony Blair. The case against two members of éirígí was adjourned. Five people locked themselves together in front of the Sramore peat deposit site. The site is used by Shell to deposit peat excavated from the Bellanaboy refinery site near Rossport. The gardai dragged several supporters away by the hair and eventually removed the protestors with the aid of the Fire Brigade. The site was succesfully blockaded for up to 5 hours. read full story / add a comment

Experts had warned for years that the M3 should never have been routed through the Gabhra (Tara-Skreen) Valley. What we refer to today as a “henge” are two related architectural forms that come from the late Neolithic and the early Bronze age. They date from about 2500 to 1800BC and may consist of banks, earth enclosures and also timber circles and that is what we have in this case. Rath Medb at is an example of the earthen enclosure. Today was the official opening of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission. The idea is to provide a civilian oversight of the Gardaí and provide a way for people to make complaints about the police without going through the Guards themselves. Unfortunately, only invited members of the corporate media were allowed into the opening, so this indymedia report is confined to the outside of the building. Amazingly, the Gardaí tried to stop me taking pictures on the pavement outside, and even tried to block the camera. Eventually after trying to interrogate me they stopped and sulked from a distance. I think they realised that they couldn't arrest me outside the GSOC offices on their opening day, but they were certainly considering it for a while... read full story / add a comment

Today is the 88th anniversary of the largest 'Mayday' demonstration in Irish history, when what the Belfast Newsletter described as "a little band of disgruntled Red-Socialists" led 100,000 workers through the streets of Belfast. Everywhere else in Ireland in 1919 had also seen massive Mayday demonstrations, 10,000 demonstrated in Burr Co. Offaly. Outside of the North East these had been called for the 1st of May "to demonstrate the solidarity of workers and to reaffirm their adhesion to the principles of self-determination" but Belfast marched to a different theme on the 3rd. North and South a massive wave of working class militancy had grown but although these struggles shared a common rhythm they happened in isolation from each other. read full story / add a comment

On 27th of April a spontaneous wildcat strike broke out in MUSGRAVE warehouses in Dublin. The whole crew, around 80 people, both immigrant and natives - in solidarity stopped their work after successive acts of discrimination by the management. read full story / add a comment
