The US and the far right of thee opposition are trying to undermine and discredit the Venezuelan electoral system. Jimmy Carter described that system as the best in the World. Full Text at link. The presidential candidate of the Bolivarian Revolution, Nicolas Maduro, yesterday counter-attacked the opposition’s campaign to discredit Venezuela’s electoral system ahead of the 14 April presidential election. In recent days the Venezuelan opposition and allied media have been criticising the 14 April presidential election as not being held in “fair and transparent” conditions, in an apparent effort to discredit the Venezuelan electoral system ahead of the vote. This campaign appears to have intensified following comments made on Friday 15 March by the US’s Assistant Secretary of State Roberta Jacobson, who said that it would be “a little difficult” for “open, fair, and transparent elections” to be held on 14 April. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Weekly Worker issue 954 - March 21 2013 Far from being a new broom or ‘reformer’, writes Eddie Ford, the new pope is a reactionary to his marrow Unless you possess a very strong stomach, mainstream media coverage of the new pope (aka Jorge Mario Bergoglio) has been truly revolting. A tidal wave of idiotic, euphoric banality. Then again, what else do you expect from the likes of the BBC, which always genuflects before anything that appears strong, powerful and ancient? BEN MURRAY MEMORIAL On Saturday, March 9th, at Moy Bridge, Aughnacloy, a memorial was unveiled to Ben Murray, who resided close by. The construction of the monument was organised by a group from North Monaghan and South Tyrone, supported by the Friends of Charlie Donnelly and a broad group of Left and Republican organisations. Ben Murray was a trade unionist and left-wing activist, who was killed fighting fascism in Aragon, Spain, in March, 1938. The unveiling took place on a cold, wet and windy Saturday afternoon, following the wreath-laying ceremony at Edendork, Dungannon, at the Charlie Donnelly monument. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Last year the Tory Mayor of London attacked the Irish community and Saint Patrick's Day celebrations there, describing them as left wing crap. This year a whistleblower inside MI5's multi-million pound palace in Hollywood, has revealed that Martin Corey, who has been locked up for almost three years without trial, charge or explanation of length of sentence, has in fact been indefinitely interned, for wearing a green tie at an Irish parade in Bodenstown. This month a group of socialist and republican activists from a variety of backgrounds throughout Ireland came together in Dublin to establish the Peadar O’Donnell Socialist Republican Forum. The concept of the forum arose from a series of seminars that in turn had their origin in a symposium on “Republicanism in the Twenty-First Century” hosted by the Communist Party in September last year. The aim of the forum is to promote the ideas of socialist republicanism, as best expressed by James Connolly, Liam Mellows, and Peadar O’Donnell. The forum is named after Peadar O’Donnell in recognition of his outstanding role as a union organiser, republican soldier, author, enemy of fascism, friend of the worker and small farmer, committed socialist, and lifelong activist for peace and against imperialism. read full story / add a comment ![]()

I’ll miss Hugo. When I first was introduced to him in Porto Alegre in 2003, he greeted me, “Mi padre,” and said he learned a lot from me. I was dubious about this and thought he was simply buttering me up, like any two-bit politician. Then he started telling me what he learned from Development Debacle, Deglobalization, and Dark Victory. I was stupefied; the guy actually read my stuff! read full story / add a comment ![]()

The Commandante is dead but the Revolution continues. If there is an afterlife then Chavez is in Valhalla. He wrote, he read, and mostly he spoke. Hugo Chávez, whose death has been announced, was devoted to the word. He spoke publicly an average of 40 hours per week. As president, he didn't hold regular cabinet meetings; he'd bring the many to a weekly meeting, broadcast live on radio and television. Aló, Presidente, the programme in which policies were outlined and discussed, had no time limits, no script and no teleprompter. One session included an open discussion of healthcare in the slums of Caracas, rap, a self-critical examination of Venezuelans being accustomed to the politics of oil money and expecting the president to be a magician, a friendly exchange with a delegation from Nicaragua and a less friendly one with a foreign journalist. read full story / add a comment ![]()
