On Saturday April 14, Iran attended talks on its nuclear programme with six world powers in Istanbul. In the end, this ‘summit’ was little more than talks about talks - to take place in May in Baghdad. The uneasy stand-off continues and the strong possibility remains of an attack on Iran within months. Indeed, the outcome of the meeting has provoked a degree of cynicism, with press outlets in the US, the UK and Israel pointing out that Syria now seems to have learned the ‘Iran method’ - that is, agree to talks simply to buy time and postpone intervention. read full story / add a comment

The Israeli authorities must cease the practice of holding individuals in administrative detention, and ensure Palestinians in their custody are not subjected to ill-treatment and have access to adequate medical care when needed. The expected release of Palestinian Khader Adnan after four months in Israeli custody without charge or trial coincides with a mass prisoner hunger strike which Amnesty International says demonstrates anger over administrative detention and prison conditions. Adnan, a 34-year old baker allegedly linked to Islamic Jihad, is due to be released in a deal between his lawyers and the Israeli authorities in February in which he agreed to end his 66-day hunger strike protesting at his administrative detention and ill-treatment. School children to be introduced to gambling and animal abuse. Who would have thought the school curriculum in Ireland would be introducing children to Gambling and animal abuse? The Irish Greyhound Board, the IGB, are now offering students and teachers tours of Greyhound stadia around the country. These same racing tracks allow children to bet their pocket money as no age limit applies to anyone placing bets. The IGB, synonymous with trying to export Greyhounds to China and with cruel treatment towards unwanted hounds are using school tours to indoctrinate children into gambling. read full story / add a comment

At the household charges meeting on the 24th March Socialist Democracy distributed leaflets advertising a meeting on the Greek crisis in Dublin at 7-00 on Thursday 5th. We distributed further leaflets at the household charges march on the 31st, only to find that the assembly area was festooned with hurriedly photocopied SWP posters advertising a largely identical meeting at the same time, taking place 100 metres from our venue. read full story / add a comment

Press Release: CALL FOR IMMEDIATE END TO ANIMALS IN CIRCUSES AFAR yet again call for a ban on animals in Circuses after a circus trainer was trampled by an elephant today in Cork. Our sympathies lie with the animals who are imprisoned in circuses for entertainment. We call on our elected representatives to use common sense on this issue which is growing more pressing as absolutely no legislation exists in Ireland to prohibit the keeping of exotic species.
