FOCUS Ireland launches research which highlights Low Social & Affordable Housing under Part V

· Part V can still play a key role in delivering housing if report’s recommendations are acted upon
· Focus Ireland argues that cash payments in lieu of social & affordable housing should be avoided and only used as a “last resort”

Focus Ireland today launched “Building For Inclusion” - a research report that examines the effectiveness of Part V of the Planning and Development Act 2000-2004. First introduced in 2000, Part V of the Planning and Development Acts is widely known for the provision allowing local authorities to insist that up to 20 per cent of land in most housing developments be reserved for social and affordable housing.

Since its introduction the legislation has been never far from the headlines - when first introduced it was heavily resisted by the construction industry, referred to the Supreme Court to test its constitutionality and amended by the Government in 2002.

In two seperate incidents this evening, members of Circus SYDNEY(a Courtney Circus / previously Circus OZZ and Circus NEW YORK) assaulted different activists both inside and outside the circus.

The first incident happened when some activists from The Alliance for Animal Rights were giving out flyers on the footpath outside the Circus now in Blackrock. A circus member attempted to get one by the neck and take their leaflets.

The second incident happened when four people including two minors and a wild animal expert attended the actual show. A female was set upon by a circus member and had her digital camera snatched and batteries removed. She had to attend St Vincents Hospital for treatment for a possible joint fracture in her hand, she was also verbally threatened. Activists called for Gardai assistance.

Gardai were notified on both occasions.

[BF, personal opinion: Check this out - USI, supposedly a "Union" to protect and advance student's rights as well as being an official affiliate of SIPTU charged with advancing trade union rights, when it's bosses weren't able to harass and bully this employee to their satisfaction, they suspended him without pay. If all the details of this case go public next month after the Rights Commissioner, it is going to have a devastating impact on those who still believe that the USI is a progressive social force in Ireland. To date The Examiner and Irish Indo have carried the story.] read full story / add a comment

Eoin Ó Broin, noted environmental and political campaigner, and one of the founders of the Shell to Sea campaign, has vowed to cut off his dreadlocks to raise money for the Rossport Solidarity Camp.

If he reaches his target of €2,000, his hair will be publicly cut on Grafton Street in Dublin on July 29th.

Eoin claims he can't remember his last haircut, and his dreadlocks represent "about six years" growth.

By this drastic action he is seeking to draw attention to the fact that the Shell to Sea campaign is continuing, and the lengths that people are prepared to go to resist Shell and the Irish government's scheme to install a dangerous, high pressure gas pipeline and a huge onshore refinery in Rossport, County Mayo.

People can donate money at pledgebank www.http://www.pledgebank.com/cutthedreadsoff (€10) or http://www.pledgebank.com/cutthedreads (€25) or in person at Connolly Books, the Sinn Féin Shop, Barracka Books in Cork or Charlie Byrne's Bookshop on Middle Street in Galway City.

Or look out for Eoin on Grafton Street or in Temple Bar next Thursday and Friday.
He'll be raising funds in person. read full story / add a comment

ANTI-WAR IRELAND CRITICISES BERTIE AHERN MEETING WITH JEB BUSH

Jeb Bush, governor of Florida and brother of the US president, arrived in Dublin this morning. He is to meet the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and will speak at a business function at 12.30pm in the Conrad Hotel at Earlsfort Terrace.

Anti-war activists will stage a protest outside the hotel during the Jeb Bush event.

Anti-War Ireland, which organised the protest at Shannon airport when his brother visited in 2004, believes that Jeb Bush should be left in no doubt about the depth of opposition in Ireland to his support for the war on Iraq and Afghanistan. read full story / add a comment

The Captive Animals Protection Society (CAPS) is today calling for the seizure of the animals being kept in Circus Sydney, following the admission of a circus spokesperson (Mr.Jan Erik Brenner on Matt Cooper – The Last Word Today FM) that a kangaroo escaped in Cork last weekend after children were allowed unsupervised access to its pen following one of its shows. The circus has since moved on to Wexford, effectively abandoning the kangaroo in Cork.

The kangaroo, which remains at large, escaped when children left the gate open after going inside to pet the animal. On the Last Word programme, Mr Bernner admitted that children do have unsupervised access to animals after big top shows, and that the kangaroo escaped when the gate of its pen was left open by one of the visiting children read full story / add a comment

ARAN is taking a big step and is willing to organize a huge rally against the cruelty on December 10th 2006, which is the official International Day For Animal Rights. All over the world events will be taking place and we want this year to be the biggest ever here in Ireland.

Right now the animals are counting on us all to speak up and free them from the pain and needless suffering that is taking place in the greyhound industry, bloodsports, circuses that use animals, animal experiments, shooting, fishing, homeless and abandoned dogs, cats and other animals, animals slaughtered for their skins, their flesh and even dogs that are chained up all over the country who are forced to live outside in all weather extremes be it in the thundering harsh winter or the excruciating summer heat that we seem to be getting, all this without food, water or shelter and there is so much more happening to animals. They desperately need us all to help them and we must because we all know this cruelty is needless and it’s in our hearts to do so. read full story / add a comment
