Today campaigners of the Robin Hood Tax Campaign presented a cheque for €1.8bn at Leinster House in Dublin. It represents the amount of revenue a Financial Transaction Tax (FTT) could raise over the 5 year lifespan of the next Government. Bord Pleanala have refused a request by CHASE for an extension to the Oral Hearing date for Indavers Ringaskiddy incinerator application and confirmed that the Oral Hearing will start on 19 April at Carrigaline Court Hotel at 10.30am, citing 12 July 2016 as deadline date under Strategic Infrastructure Process. CHASE wrote to An Bord Pleanala following receipt of registered letters on 31 March/1st April advising of the hearing date, leaving just 12 working days preparation for the hearing. Previous hearings lasted 3 weeks. Bord Pleanala received over 220 submissions objecting to the proposal, each of which was accompanied by a payment of 50Euro. The Right2Water campaign said today (Wednesday January 20th) that water charges are being used to give tax breaks to corporations and the wealthiest in our society. The Boycott Farmed Salmon campaign has issued a reply to an IFA statement on Friday alleging the campaign was engaging in a ‘smear campaign’. It has published two more pre-slaughter tests confirming the presence of antibiotic, anti-parasitic and anaesthetic chemicals. [1] In a statement the campaign said it stood entirely behind the publication and accuracy of the pre-slaughter test results for farmed salmon they published on line last week showing the presence of 10 chemicals. Last year we had alot of coverage in the Irish mainstream news about farmers and individuals being stopped from extracting peat -the reason is because most of our bogs which are wonderful habitats are almost completely destroyed. However we never heard or was it mentioned that there was no attempt to stop the industrial extraction of peat by large private companies yet this does infinitely more damage. It seems there is one law for the people and no law for business interests. If we are going to save our bogs we should at least make the laws applicable to ALL parties.

The European Citizens’ Initiative "Stop TTIP" has reached a new record number of signatures a few days ahead of a critical vote on TTIP in the European Parliament. With 2 million signatories, this is the largest European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) since the introduction of the instrument in 2012. In order for an ECI to be successful, half this number would suffice.
