Fianna Fail and their cronies in big business have wrecked the country. However, Fine Gael and Labour have shown that they represent more of the same. As much as they try to blame the old government for the crisis, they are responsible for continuing the disastrous bailouts and have promised further unfair taxes, privatisations and cuts in jobs and public services. ... read full story / add a comment

Croke Park Conference Centre 31st May 8:30am Supported by the United Left Alliance This week a senior engineer told Cork City Councillors that 60% of that city’s water supply leaked out of the system. This situation is repeated up and down the country to one degree or another. However instead of investing the resources needed to repair our water supply as a matter of urgency this government is determined to press on with the crazy strategy of installing water meters in homes that don’t already have one. This is estimated to cost €600 million. The government intends to fund this by introducing a flat rate ‘utility charge’ next year and then once meters are installed to begin charging people based on their use of water. ... read full story / add a comment

Yesterday afternoon, Shell security personnel watched helplessly from their compound as Shell to Sea supporters overturned bog tracks that were laid to enable heavy machinery to build the next stage of the Corrib gas pipeline. Since Tuesday Shell has been trying to work on this most controversial part of their project, despite the fact that a judicial review of the Bord Pleanala permission for it is due this week. The campaigners from all over the country displaced more than 30ft of bog tracks. Today, in an even more meaningless exercise then normal, a minority of the population of Ireland will choose between two almost identical options as to who will implement the ECB / IMF austerity plans for southern Ireland. Outside of this plan the wealthiest 1% will continue to set economic policy tomorrow as they did yesterday and have throughout the last decades. The electoral circus we are now going through provides the rest of us with the illusion of control even though deep down almost everyone acknowledges the ritual as having no real impact on what policies are actually implemented. ... read full story / add a comment
