#Spanishrevolution now has 650 areas of Revolutionary action around planet
All are agreed, something amazing is happening right here and right now on this beautiful little planet. And, by Christ do we need it!!! A week ago, even in Spain, there wasn’t too much awareness of what was going on with the M-15 movement, but now, only days later and it appears that a bomb has gone off. Last look on the digital map of places participating in the #SPANISHREVOLUTION gave a count of 650 (yes that’s right SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY) places around the planet expressing solidarity with what’s going on here in Spain, or being inspired to bring the revolution to their part of the world.
Tahrir > Spain > World Rather than explaining just how incredible these last days have been and where this eruption of “Democracia Real, Ya!” (Real Democracy Now) has come from, I’ll direct you to the two fine reports from the heart of the rebellion: Andy Price, writing from the revolt’s heart in Madrid`s Plaza de la SOLución on Z:NET (1) in “From Arab Spring to Spanish Summer: The Protests Continue” explains the magic, the creativity and the power of it all, as things very very quickly unfolded in just a matter of days. And in “Notes from Barcelona’s Tahrir Square“(2), Josep Maria Antentas and Esther Vivas explain the origins of where this movement, or revolution, have come from and where they hope to get to.
A few days ago, maybe Thursday, we greeted the news with much joy that the movement had grown so big so quick; about 60 towns in Spain were having demos or occupations. We saw the Washington Post’s front page that had a picture of Plaza de la SOLución accompanied with the heading “A spring of frustration in Spain” (3) and we thought “something is really kicking off here, this is going big”, word went about that “indignant” demos had been called in Italy and also planned for Birmingham, Amsterdam, Berlin, Warsaw, Paris, Budapest, Istanbul and Buenos Aires and we thought “FUCK, this is really starting to take off”. The Toma la placa (take the square) group was coordinating international demos, by end of Thursday the list was still small but sufficient enough for the TWITTER tag #spanishrevolution to appear in general Spanish mainstream media, like in Publico.ES: “La #spanishrevolution se extiende a todo el mundo” (The #spanishrevolution is growing around the world) (4). It was about this time that we came across that super photo which we think is from the rebels in Manchester: NOBODY EXPECTS THE #SPANISHREVOLUTION (5)
So, anyways, since Thursday we saw things grow and grow and grow, its just got bigger, bolder AND spread globally all around the world. Here in Placa Catalunya incredible work is being done around the clock, the TAKE THE SQUARE! team have produced, well are still producing, a super online toolkit (6); the how’s, why’s, what’s of creating your own pocket of resistance in a town near you. On the site is the world map with all the points marked with places around the world taking action (7) Here in the square, inspired by all this global action a group set up one of the finest things I have ever seen; a big board with maps of the World, Europe, Spain, Catalunya, Barcelona city, all with loads of coloured little tacks stuck into them, each being a node of where local groups are active and have taken to the streets. This is without doubt the most powerful thing I have seen which communicates to the people passing through the square (revolutionaries, locals going from A to B, tourists…) just how big this movement has got. So in honour of that small, simple colourful stand and whoever created I pass on through photos the beauty of this moment in time.
Presently, many taken Spanish revolutionary squares are now doing live streams (8). Just an hour ago we had a first live stream hook up; the squares of Donostia (The Basque name for San Sebastian) and Barcelona greeted each other. A lovely moment! We hope to spread this square-to-square (S2S) greeting to further strengthen the movement, maybe we might even say hi to the Peoples republic of Cork (9) tomorrow, who knows???
So wherever you are tune in, get inspired, spread word, call an event, take a square… Change (Y)our world, Real Democracy Now! (10)
Peace, love, hope, solidarity and strength from the occupied zone, Placa Catalunya, Barcleona’s Tahrir square.
