Transition Galway - Free Trees & Climate Change Info. Stand

Transition Galway will be giving out 100 oak trees for free to people who wish to plant them at home. Trees will be given out on Shop Street on Saturday December 12th starting at 1pm.

Transition Galway are also organising a climate change information stand at the same time. Information will be provided to people interested in reducing their carbon footprint.

There will be leaflets explaining how best to plant your free tree.

Trees have a role in tackling climate change as trees remove (sequester) CO2 from the atmosphere during photosynthesis and return oxygen back to the atmosphere as a by-product. Trees therefore act as a carbon sink by removing the carbon and storing it as cellulose in their trunk, branches, leaves and roots while releasing oxygen back into the air.

In addition, a native oak tree growing in Ireland can support about 290 different species of plants, animals, birds and insects for food and shelter.

Transition Galway is a recently formed Transition Initiative. It is part of a vibrant, international grassroots movement that brings people together to explore how we – as communities - can respond to the environmental, economic and social challenges arising from climate change, resource depletion and an economy based on growth.
