Budget day: "Show You're Angry; Make Lots of Noise"

category dublin | anti-capitalism | event notice author Wednesday December 02, 2009 10:58author by Andrew - Social Solidarity Networkauthor email socialsolidaritynetwork at gmail dot com Report this post to the editors

The Budget is going to be a massive attack on ordinary working people and the poor across Ireland. Lets show our anger in huge number outside the Dail on Dec 9th as they waffle within. The Social Solidarity Network is joining the protests that day at 5pm to demand "Reverse the Cuts Make the Rich Pay" and "Tax the Greedy Not the Needy".

Other organisations have already announced protests at the Dail that day including the Dublin Council of Trade Unions, Shell to Sea and the INTO and we are sure more will follow. We'll be joining these during the day and would encourage others to do the same as we build towards a massive protest between 5 and 7pm. We hope to see you there.

"The Social Solidarity network is a grouping of people who have come together to provide a forum for workers and communities to unite to resist the attacks and to build links across the many struggles which will break out over the coming months."

Have the INTO backed this protest? I've heard nothing of this- great if they were?

A motion will go before INTO meetings in the next couple of days looking for support for a protest at the Dail on Budget Day. I expect that it will be agreed and that there will be a sizeable INTO representation there, as people are very annoyed about the attempts to foist a pay cut on us in the guise of 'unpaid leave'.

The CPSU is having a protest at the Dail on budget day at lunchtime and is calling on other public sector workers to join them. How can the INTO have a protest at the Dail on budget day when the schools will be open and the teachers will be working?

author by Andrewpublication date Wed Dec 02, 2009 17:04author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Probably by protesting after work rather than during their lunch hour?

The SSN put out the call for 5-7 because we recognised that is when number can be maximised (well short of a spontaneous general strike which would seem unlikely). I guess quite large numbers of INTO teachers could get there by 4pm and as the original statement points out there will probably be protests from a number of organisations called throughout the day. So whatever groups should simply call demonstrations for whatever times they can get people there at, we'll all be on the streets together once we are down there and we are pretty much all fighting against the same thing.

Dublin City North branch of the INTO at its branch committee meeting last night decided to organise a protest against attacks on public service pay and services at the Dail on Wednesday at 4:00pm. We'll now be contacting other INTO branches and branches of other public sector unions to join this protest

Press Statement issued by Social Solidarity Network

Budget Day: “Show You’re Angry. Make Lots of Noise”

Campaigning Group Social Solidarity Network (SSN) has called on people to come to the Dáil on Budget Day this Wednesday at 5:00p.m. to show their anger at “government attacks on ordinary working people and the poor across Ireland.”

“This budget will be a disaster for ordinary people,” said SSN spokesperson Mark Malone. “The government has made it clear that they are going to make ordinary people pay the cost of the financial crisis.”

“We can expect huge attacks on the living standards of ordinary people in this budget,” Malone continued. “While those who benefited from the Celtic Tiger get away scot free, the rest of us are being asked to pick up the pieces. But the rich must be made to pay for the crisis they created. So we’re asking people to rally under two slogans - "Reverse the Cuts Make the Rich Pay" and "Tax the Greedy Not the Needy".

“We’re also asking people to come prepared to make lots of noise. It’s time that we let the government know the level of anger that there is in the country. So people should come and join our protest in huge numbers and show our anger outside the Dáil as the politicians waffle inside.” Mr. Malone concluded.

The SSN protest is just one of a large number of protests planned for the Dáil on Budget Day.

The Social Solidarity Network is a grouping of people who have come together to provide a forum for workers and communities to unite to resist the attacks and to build links across the many struggles which will break out over the coming months.

I do not know what most people may think, but will this goverment just step down, they already got a mandate from the people to go at the local elections.

So the question is will go willingly or do they have to be removed by force, the way they are running the country is no longer, democratic, but a dictatorship, for their high wages, which they do not deserve and their pensions.

When will we all stand and tell these criminals to get out of office.

You'll get your chance at the next election. Thats the way democracy works. You elect people to do the job for a few years; if they mess it up, you can vote them out next time and pick someone else to give it a shot.
