A Swiss girl has been been taken into care because her parents stopped her taking puberty blockers, breaching a ban on conversion therapy. Is this what Labour means by a "full, trans-inclusive ban on conversion practices"?

The West's headlong rush to jettison fossil fuels and hit 'Net Zero' CO2 emissions is impoverishing us while enriching China, which is ramping up its coal-fired industry to sell us all the 'green' technology.

Galway Transition Town Meeting

category galway | environment | event notice author Thursday October 15, 2009 15:53author by Liamo Report this post to the editors

Meeting for establishing a Galway Transition Town group - 8pm Tuesday 27th October at Galway Social Space, Middle Street (across from An Taibhdhearc Theatre).

Transition Towns initiatives are part of a vibrant, international grassroots movement that brings people together to explore how we – as communities - can respond to the environmental, economic and social challenges arising from climate change, resource depletion and an economy based on growth. We don’t look for anyone to blame or anyone to save us, but believe our communities have within themselves the innovation and ingenuity to create positive solutions to the converging crises of our time. We believe in igniting and supporting local responses at any level and from anyone – and aim to weave them together into a coordinated action plan for change towards a lower energy lifestyle. By building local resilience, we will be able to collectively respond to whatever the future may bring in a calm, positive and creative way. And by remembering how to live within our local means, we can rediscover the spirit of community and a feeling of power, belonging and sharing in a world that is vibrant, just and truly sustainable.

Galway seems to be under discussion these days and perhaps now is as good a time as any to take a look at how Galway's cultural scene works and is administrated. This would go along with a myriad other gripes publicly bruited about concerning lack of accountability at City Hall on a number of issues. There would appear to be a view there that answering queries form the public - or being courteous to the public - is simply not done. This is the state of things regarding planning and art's administration. If this comment is left posted, it will undoubtedly be copied by some well-serving citizen and sent on to a number of outlets. The tradition of anonymous mails in Galway city is now well established.

Hi all

Galway is indeed a lovely place, i lived there for half year and loved being up with the ducks at wood quay, rambling along the riverways following the roaring river corrib. There is a huge connection with nature there, I think this plays a huge factor in the "tribespeople" being such a relaxed, connected, warm and funny people. Both those natives and blow ins, like myself.

Anyway, heres a few more links about transition. Its strange, Ive heard very little about transition on imc.ie, but i know there is much happening in Ireland. In Britain its blooming, here in barcelona we are busy with our transition HUB group.

This, for me, is the definitive film about the transition movement, what its about, where it started, where its going etc... made by the powerdown crew;

The Powerdown Show - Transition Towns and Energy Descent Pathways
http://www.vimeo.com/4678220

This is programme 8 of the Cultivate Centre's 10 part TV series - The Powerdown Show.

In this programme the history of the Transition Town process is outlined and the concept of Energy Decent Action Planning (EDAP) is explained. EDAPs demonstrate workable partnerships between the community, key stakeholders and local government's commitment to finding solutions to climate change and peak oil and is a way to build resilient and robust communities.

Filmed in Kinsale, Ireland and Totnes, UK, this episode features Rob Hopkins, author of the Transition Handbook, Klaus Harvey of Transition Town Kinsale, Graham Strouts, Kinsale College of Further Education, and Davie Philip who coordinates the Irish Transition Town network amongst others.
