The Guardian, of all papers, has acknowledged that predictions about the disappearance of Arctic sea ice may ? just may ? have been exaggerated. Paging Gore Vidal: Can we have that prize back please?

The Climate Change Committee's Fifth Carbon Budget, produced 10 years ago, got its predictions about the price of gas in 2025 and the price of renewables predictably wrong, says Ben Pile.

A Call To Women - Shannon Airport

category clare | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Tuesday September 15, 2009 20:22author by Margaretta D'Arcy - Women in Media & Entertainment Report this post to the editors

Come to a 24-hour Intervention/Mediation/Knit-in at Shannon Airport

Women are asked to gather at Shannon Airport from 1pm Saturday 26th September to 1pm Sunday 27th September to reclaim our civilian airport from the military, and to implement UN Resolutions 1325 and 1820 for women to be part of conflict resolution and peace processes.

“It is the policies of the big powers intervening and backing the most extreme elements in Afghanistan that have rolled back the rights of women … Afghanistan has long been used as a deadly playground in the Great Game between superpowers, from the British Empire to the Soviet Empire, and now the Americans and their Allies.”
[Malalai Joya, Afghan MP, suspended from Parliament for her attacks on the warlords]

IRELAND IS ONE OF THE “ALLIES”

Thousands of commercial planes carrying troops and military cargo for Afghanistan have passed and are still passing through Shannon. During the past month alone, eighty-nine planes were recorded, an average of nearly three per day.

Seven Irish soldiers are serving with the NATO forces in Afghanistan and are stated by the Irish government to be playing “a small but significant role” in the operations.

WE ARE INVOLVED
WE ARE IMPLICATED IN THE DESTRUCTION

“Our country has not been liberated. It is still under the warlords’ control and NATO occupation only reinforces their power … The men and women of Afghanistan are like pigeons who have been freed from Taliban cages, but whose wings have been cut off and who are in the claws of vampires who suck their blood. … As long as the subjugation of women persists, our society will not be able to take off and move forward … The Americans spend one hundred million dollars a day in Afghanistan for the war. International aid for reconstruction is seven million dollars a day, the vast majority of it falls into corrupt hands, never reaching those who need it.”
[Malalai Joya]

GIVE MONEY TO THE WOMEN
NOT TO THE WARLORDS

IMPLEMENT 1325 AND 1820
