press release
Tuesday August 25, 2009 11:59 by pantalona - Galway one world centre
A night of words, film and music for Afri’s work in support of the Rossport communities. Johnny Moynihan
Sean Tyrell
Donal O'Kelly
Rita Ann Higgins
Margaretta D'Arcy and John Arden
Pat O'Donnell of Rossport
Corrib Gas Project Arts Centre – film extracts by Seamus Nolan
Known as "The Bard of Dalymount", as a young man Johnny Moynihan played in the band, Sweeney's Men and was a sometime member of Planxty and De Danann. Easily as renowned for his roguish wit as for his bouzouki playing, he can most recently be found playing old time American tunes with Moonshine, alongside Lena Ullman and Frank Hall.
A singer and storyteller with conviction, passion and unadulterated skills, Sean Tyrell accompanies himself on tenor dobro and tenor guitar. His latest CD, Cry of the Dreamer, tells the amazing story of a lesser-known Irish hero John Boyle O'Reilly through song.
Donal O’Kelly is a writer and actor. His much-travelled solo plays include the award-winning Catalpa, Bat The Father, Rabbit The Son, and Jimmy Joyced!
As an actor, his film roles include a leading role in Roddy Doyle’s The Van and more recently in the acclaimed bilingual film, Kings.
He is an associate director of the peace and justice organisation Afri.
Since the appearance of her first collection of poems, ‘Goddess on a Mervue Bus’, Rita Ann Higgins has consistently produced provocative and heart-warming poems of high-jinx, jittery grief and telling social comment; a gutsy, anarchic chronicler of the Irish dispossessed.
Long-time supporters of the Rossport communities’ struggle, Margaretta D’Arcy and John Arden are a highly creative and experimental partnership in theatre, literature, radio & film, who have consistently maintained their standards of integrity. They will read from some of their collective works.
Pat O'Donnell is a fourth generation Erris fisherman, opposed to the Corrib Gas Project. He will discuss his experiences with journalist Mick McCaughan.
Corrib Gas Project Arts Centre is an exhibition by Seamus Nolan, looking at the 10 year struggle between the Rossport community and the gas pipeline project planned for their area. Extracts from a theatrical reconstruction of the recent Bord Pleanala oral hearing performed by members of the community will be screened throughout the evening.
The full exhibition is running in the Project Arts Centre, Dublin, Aug.28th – Oct.10th .

Last evening's event in Galway featured a full house, which was gratifying to see. The reading by Rita Ann Higgins was impressive and the poem to the point; the music was great, Sean Tyrell and Johnny Moynihan were in fine form and the interview with Pat O'Donnell harrowing to hear. The news that gardaí are almost weekly harassing participants in the protests should be seen as a direct attack upon democracy in this country and, one imagines, could not be accomplished so freely without the say-so of a politician or a Minister somewhere and at some level. O'Donnell's account of events which the media scandalously avoid reporting should certainly be considered by human rights groups. Rossport is virtually under seige by the State in the service of Big Oil. John Arden and Margaretta d'Arcy put on a short scene based on an old clipping from The Irish Times. It was wonderfully organised and shows that, without doubt, there is public support for the protest in Mayo. Congratulations to the organisers!
