Tina Sani in Concert, Liberty Hall Theatre, Dublin

category dublin | arts and media | event notice author Tuesday April 07, 2009 12:46author by Eva Yasin - Tha Yasin Foundationauthor email evayasin at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Islamic-Celtic connections: An evening of the finest in world music

Acclaimed Pakistani ghazal singer in concert with musical accompaniment on harmoium, table, flute and sarangi. Joined by acclaimed Irish uilleann piper Ronan Browne, Irish-Egyptian seanós singer Roisin Elsafty and virtuoso guitarist Stefan Galt. Organised on behalf of the Yasin Foundation, a joint Ireland-Pakistan initiative which funds an education programme for Pakistani women. All proceeds will benefit the foundation's educational trust fund.

Tina Sani will be performing a rich and exciting selection of classical ghazal pieces, accompanied by her musicians on flute, sarangi, harmonium and tabla. She has a well-deserved international reputation for her deep knowledge and understanding of urdu poetry, which allows her to convey the delicate nuances, emotions and moods of a ghazal perfectly. Years of training and practise in classical music and raga have brought maturity and fluidity to her voice and earned her praise for the apparantly effortless ease with which she can render a difficult piece. The ghazal is an ancient Arabic style of poetry that dates from the 7th century and is often compared to the western sonnet. But each ghazal couplet is actually a series of self-contained stanzas, which in themselves often make a dramatic or moving statement.
