The internet is killing our culture

category international | worker & community struggles and protests | event notice author Tuesday November 04, 2008 12:53author by unwagedslave Report this post to the editors

Andrew Keen is one of the pioneering entrepreneurs of the first internet boom. He argues that Web 2.0 is an anarchic movement that destroys culture of real value. A must listen for all indymedia participants. Short 15 minute radio program.

BBC Radio 4 Iconoclasts
It "worships the creative amateur: the self-taught filmmaker, the dorm-room musician, the unpublished writer" and its rise is killing off the higher-level culture we would get from paid professionals who can only be published if they're good enough. We need the gatekeepers if we value high quality creative expression. Furthermore the more free content is available; the more unwilling people are to pay for content. Andrew Keen is fiercely opposed to the ideology of the free, we should be rewarded for our labour.

cos they see the internet as a tool of expanding culture. I would suggest that the doublespeak in this
article comes from someone who ate too many e-litist munchies for their breakfast.

I would imagine that historically the work of Gnu/fsf/eff/Floss has contributed more to information
sharing and documentation than any other movement in History, moving controls and money into
the equations is about sniffily attempting to take away a democratic organisation tool from us plebs.

All the main cultural/theatrical/archival services in ireland are easy access/net friendly-
