EDA Cork's September Monthly Meeting

category cork | miscellaneous | event notice author Wednesday September 03, 2008 21:46author by EDA Cork - Ethical Development Action Report this post to the editors

... with a focus on Haiti

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere even though Haiti was the second country to get independence (the first black republic) with the USA being the first. Since then Haiti has never really progressed compared to the countries surrounding her. Haiti shares an island with the Dominican Republic and the difference between the two countries is extraordinary. Haiti has 300,000 street children. Over 42% of the Haitien population is under the age of 14 and the country has an unemployed rate of over 70%. The life expectancy of men and women is in now in their late forties. The average salary would be around 2 US dollars a day and now a large sack of rice is around 40 US dollars this having increased from 27 US dollars only since the beginning of 2007.

Ethical Development Action is back in action after a short break over the summer. Our September monthly meeting is being held the 2nd Wednesday of the month but from then on they will continue as usual on the 1st Wednesday of the month and be held in Nasc's office on Mary Street, Cork City (apart from October). The outline for the next couple of months is:

September Monthly Meeting:
Haiti, co-hosted with James Kelly who lived there for 18 months

October Monthly Meeting:
Immigration, co-hosted with Nasc at the National Sculpture Factory

November Monthly Meeting:
International Labour Organisation with Gillian McCarthy

December Monthly Meeting:
Celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights

Starting the end of October we'll be holding a 6-evening course on Aid, Trade and Debt, details will follow soon.
