event notice
Tuesday August 12, 2008 01:53 by DM - Labour Party
Demo tomorrow against the fees called by USI Mobilise immediately against the proposed introduction of college fees and protest outside the Dept of Education, Marlborough Street, Dublin at 1pm on Wednesday. The idea of the demo is to send a shot across the bows of the government that the reintroduction of fees will be opposed tooth and nail by students and political activists all over the country. A good sized turnout at such short notice will do just that. |

Jump To Comment: 4 3 2 1where did you find the figures for the threshold? i've been trying to find it and have come across a few different numbers and was just wondering which one of them is actually correct.
There are some very petty people on this thread. The two previous posters are in smug denial of the fact that third level fees are an obstacle to access to College and University which will effect in particular students from Lower and middle income backgrounds. Fees are a class issue, if they were re-introduced many working class students wil be excluded from going to third level. The Treshold for exemption from the proposed fees as suggested by Batt O'Keefe is students coming from families with annual earnings of €38,000. In the Ireland of 2008 earning €38,000 per annum doesnt make one middle class. How can those earning just a little bit above €38,000 per annum be expected to hand over €5000 a year (and possibly double that for engineering and medicine) in fees.
There is a way for the rich to pay its called taxation, the reason why we the country is short of money to pay for education is because too much of the money made during the Celtic Tiger has been handed out in Tax Concessions for speculators, corporations and high earners. The fairest way to fund edcucation is to tax wealth and not education.
Forgotten about supporting the Yes vote for Lisbon already folks??
Typical flip flopping from the social democrat youth, the Lisbon treaty if passed would have undoubtedly hastened the privatisation of services such as education, and the accompanying fees.
Good to see the Labour party defending the interest of their core support. The middle class united will never be defeated. Its a pity they dont put such effort into highlighting the inequalities created by the massive state subsidy of private second level education in this country.
