For the attention of the News Editor and Health Correspondent

The Cork Council of Trade Unions has arranged a Public Meeting to discuss the current crisis within the Health Service. This meeting is to facilitate a platform of unions, its members, activists and the general public to discuss serious issues of concern within the Health Service with particular emphasis on the impact of the cutbacks throughout Cork City and County. The meeting is scheduled for 8pm on Thursday 1st May in The Metropole Gresham Hotel, MacCurtain St, Cork.

Recruitment embargos, spending cutbacks, threatened ward closures and the overall jeopardizing of essential services has prompted this public meeting. Employees of the HSE and union members from a broad spectrum of industry have, through their unions, expressed extreme concern regarding situations they are faced with on a daily basis. Recent controversial decisions by the HSE regarding additional cost cutting measures for Mallow General Hospital and the funding shortfall for the Mercy University Hospital have only added to the public’s concern. These and many other areas around the Health Service will be discussed at the meeting which is open to all members of the public. Invited speakers will consist of Trade Union Officials from unions representing HSE workers with key note addresses by Ms. Janette Byrne, Spokesperson, Patients Together and Mr. John McDonnell, Mallow General Hospital Action Group.
