One pub is closing every day. And Labour's 'banter ban' ? Clause 20 of the Employment Rights Bill ? is only going to make it worse as pubs are left with the escalating bills to cover their legal costs.

The African Union's demand for colonial reparations is an act of cynical opportunism that ignores that slavery was already endemic in Africa, and African kingdoms resisted abolition even as the British forced it on them.

Donegal Town demands closure of Fur Farms!

category national | animal rights | press release author Tuesday April 01, 2008 13:34author by ALiberation - ALiberationauthor email aliberationnow at gmail dot comauthor address www.vegaplanet.orgauthor phone 086 3203643 Report this post to the editors

Donegal can end fur farming in Ireland

Donegal Town was shocked to learn that a few people are making money off the suffering of 170, 000 animals each year and welcomed the chance to demand that this cruelty ends.

Campaigners for a fur farm free Ireland were in Donegal Town last Saturday raising awareness about the cruelty of fur farms and also that County Donegal is the fur farm capital of Ireland.

Campaigners for a fur farm free Ireland were in Donegal Town last Saturday raising awareness about the cruelty of fur farms and also that County Donegal is the fur farm capital of Ireland.

The inhabitants of Donegal Town were shocked to learn that a few people are making money off the suffering of 170, 000 animals each year and welcomed the chance to demand that this cruelty ends.

Worldwide, County Donegal is known for her beauty and does not deserve a reputation of something so cruel and ugly as being the capital of Irish fur farming.

Donegal Town is the home of the Minister of Agriculture, Mary Coughlan, the person with the most power to end fur farms in Ireland. She can stop giving a licence to the fur farmers, she can include an end to fur farming in the Animal Welfare Bill that is currently being drafted by her department or she can bring forward other legislation of her own to stop fur farming in Ireland.

One person from Donegal summed up the general feeling in the town “I can’t believe that this is happening in County Donegal and that our own Minister Coughlan is not doing something to ban it. It’s so cruel. 70 animals killed for each fur coat, killed for something nobody needs. Unbelievable!”

The group of activists, ALiberation, had a large display of banners, posters, information tables and a caged toy fox, they put a leaflet in everyone’s hand, collected petitions and answered many questions.

Spokesperson for ALiberation, Edmund Long said “We’ve had a good reaction from Donegal Town, people and shops wanted to take leaflets to pass them on to others. But there is a feeling of disbelief among people here that something like fur farming is happening in County Donegal. I’ve met people today who are very angry about that. We hope that Minister Coughlan will now listen and represent the majority of people in Ireland rather than just the owners of the fur farms. Minister Coughlan needs to end this animal cruelty and outlaw Irish Fur Farms.”
