Shell publish list of people in Mayo they are funding

Over eighty different groups applied for funding from Shell's Local Grants Programme in Erris.

Over eighty different groups applied for funding from Shell's Local Grants Programme in Erris.
Fifty-nine groups have been awarded grants ranging from €1,000 to €10,000, the details of the successful applicants can be found here- http://www.shell.com/home/content/ie-en/exploration_and....html
There was applications from all corners of Erris, and it is seen as evidence of support for the project by people from all walks of life in the barony of Erris.
It is a huge blow to the Shell-To-sea campaign, that so many of their neighbors have sought funding from Shell.

The title of this article was changed from the generic and meaningless "Record number of applicants!" - ed

It's a huge blow to Shell that they didn't offer a cent in funding for local groups until they were made to.

This funding is a consequence of Peter Cassells report, which in turn was a consequence of the Rossport Five's protest.

Don't ever let anyone tell you that protests don't work. Everyone who carried a placard in 2005 should be thanked for getting this funding for the community.

The Gombeen men in PEGG would have let Shell walk all over them for a few free drinks and pat on the head.

Now, Shell have to be persuaded to carry on their project safely, and in a way that minimises environmental damage. More protests are called for, since these obviously get results.

sur isn't a bit of tarmac on a boitherin alot more beneficial than the funding of our health care system or the future of our kids education. PEGG your foresight almost surpasses Fianna Fail's f**ked up vision of this "great little nation's" future!

“The companies didn’t consult with villagers. They handed out cash to the chiefs. It wasn’t effective at all.”

Since its discovery in 1956… oil has brought both riches and woes to Nigeria.

Everything looked possible - but everything went wrong.

… Hundreds of flares have burned nonstop for decades, releasing greenhouse gases and causing acid rain. Communities complain of corroded roofs, crop failures, and respiratory diseases. After first ordering companies to eliminate flaring by 1984, the government keeps pushing back the deadline. Shell, the main offender, recently announced that despite making considerable progress, it could not meet the latest target date of 2008.

The government documented 6,817 spills – practically one a day for 25 years – but analysts suspect the real number may be ten times higher.

"Everyone was sure they would be blessed with the coming of the black gold. But we have nothing. I feel cheated."

The idea of an unpopular landlord, king or feudal lord buying off certain people to divide and conquer any possible opposition is as old as bribery itself. The Normans and the English did it here by 'elevating 'certain native families, giving them a bit of land and a grand title and turning them against the majority population. It's a pity this multinational couldn't Shell-out and spend some of their billions on safety on thei sites but then profits come first don't they....

It is now obvious that the claim that the majority of Erris people are against this project, is wrong!
Many of these groups got as little as 1000 euro's, yet they applied for funding knowing that their names would be published on the web. (Shell informed all, that the list would be published on the web).
To me, that clearly shown that they have no no problem been seen as "pro Shell".
Eighty groups in an area as sparsely populated as Erris, must indicate that most of the groups and associations in Erris applied for funding, I suspect some of these groups were formed just to apply for funding.
Compare this with the "protest" in belmullet last Friday, when approx 12 protestors took part in a protest

A bit surprised to see 'Mayo Fleadh Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann 2008 in Ballycastle' on the list.
There are, as far as I know, at least two members of CCE among the Rossport 5.
A senior member of CCE spoke fondly of the men in prison, at the Fleadh in Letterkenny.
I suspect the Ballycastle committee haven't done themselves any favors. Have they forgotten the fuss
over the Feile Iorrais arts festival?

KIlcommon GAA turned down the big money, so Shell were forced to go all the way to Belmullet for a GAA taker. How come the club's name is down here now when the sums involved are so much smaller?

You're making the mistake of concluding that because people take shell's money that they therefore are
in support of the shell project. Can you see the flaw in that logic? Do you boycott absolutely every organisation
whose methods are unpalatable? Of course not. I wouldn't be surprised if some of that money is used
to print Shell-to-Sea leaflets.

Willing to take money off them isn't the same thing as not having a problem with them. So what's the story with Kilcommon GAA, why would they take less than €10,000 now when they turned down the €100,000 that eventually found a home in Belmullet before?

Bobcat said
"Do you boycott absolutely every organisation whose methods are unpalatable? Of course not."
I agree, of course you wont, but wouldn't you boycott someone who is poisoning you,and your drinking water, and will destroy "your" environment, and think of the children.
Wouldn't you boycott a company who will cause your children to contract deadly diseases like cancer, leukemia and respiratory diseases from this project.
A company who will run a high pressure pipeline which WILL explode killing untold numbers of your fellow "Erris people"?
NO Bobcat, I think it is your logic which is flawed, just as the strategy of the S2S campaign is flawed.
My guess is that if the Kilcommon GAA could turn back time, they wouldn't be so foolish as to refuse the money.
The road to hell is said to be paved with good intentions, history may well look back on this period in north mayo, and conclude that the S2S campaign fits that adage perfectly!.
And if you think that list made interesting reading, wait until you see the next list!.

more than twenty other groups were refused funding, I didnt think it possible that there is more than eighty groups in Erris.

Not Bravo! so much as Shame!

Anyway, out of the 59 forelocktuggers, only 8 have some sort of connection with Kilcommon.

That means that NO CONSENT remains in the proposed receiving community - that remains incontrovertible and can't be spun otherwise by some $hell hack spouting Bravo! when it comes in to the day job.

There will be more to follow on the numbers game with the much-vaunted recipients of the $hell shillin' ...

As with all $hell attempts to fool people and buy a few cheap uns, reality always wins out over rhetoric.
