RSF oppose EU constitution

category national | miscellaneous | press release author Tuesday December 18, 2007 14:58author by Des Dalton - Republican Sinn Feinauthor email saoirse at iol dot ieauthor address 223 Parnell St Dublin 1author phone 01 8729747 Report this post to the editors

Republican Sinn Fein call for rejection of EU constitution

Republican Sinn Fein Vice President Des Dalton in a statement says that RSF will be campaigning against ratification of the proposed EU constitution in next year's 26-County referendum.

Press Release/Preas Ráiteas

RSF oppose EU Constitution
Statement by the Vice President of Republican Sinn Féin Des Dalton

Republican Sinn Féin, just as we have in each referenda on the EU since 1972 will be actively campaigning for a ‘No’ vote in next year’s referendum on the EU constitution. The entire EU project is fundamentally undemocratic; eroding the rights of states, placing the power of decision making in the hands of unelected and unaccountable officials, the imposition of water rates on schools a recent glaring example of the unaccountable power of Brussels. The EU constitution, despite the cynical attempt to fool people by calling it a treaty, marks one of the final steps in the creation of an undemocratic, militarised super-state

The comments of EU Commissioner Charlie McCreevy on December 3 that the Irish people would be “the laughing stock of Europe” if they reject the EU constitution exposes the arrogance and patronising attitude to the Irish people of the political elite. Neither the French or Dutch people were so described when they rejected the EU constitution in 2004.

By rejecting the EU constitution, the people of the 26-Counties far from being a “laughing stock” would be giving a lead as well as representing the views of people throughout the EU who are being denied an opportunity to voice their opposition to the creation of an EU super state. In the case of the French and Dutch people their views as expressed in their respective referenda in 2004 are being ignored. This is not unique to France and Holland; the democratically expressed views of the people of the 26-Counties were ignored in 2001 when they rejected the Nice Treaty.

Republican Sinn Féin is calling on people who are serious about building a society based on real economic and political democracy, worker’s rights and equitable distribution of wealth, who believe in national democracy, who support neutrality and oppose involvement in imperialist wars, to join the campaign to reject the EU constitution.

Ends.

“THE IMPOSITION OF WATER RATES ON SCHOOLS A RECENT GLARING EXAMPLE OF THE UNACCOUNTABLE POWER OF BRUSSELS.” - Des Dalton
This is not the factual position. The measure in question was adopted only because the EU Council of Ministers, an intergovernmental and therefore democratic body, and the European Parliament, a directly elected democratic body, approved them. Furthermore EU legislation has to be adopted by national parliaments before becoming law. That is a triple democratic process.

THE DEMOCRATICALLY EXPRESSED VIEWS OF THE PEOPLE OF THE 26-COUNTIES WERE IGNORED IN 2001 WHEN THEY REJECTED THE NICE TREATY – Des Dalton
Not true. A materially changed proposal was put to the people and they voted to accept that. Logically if you accept the first Nice result was valid you also have to accept the second result likewise. Ditto the vote on accession in 1972; the Single European Act in 1987 and the Maastricht Treaty in 1992.

IT GOES THROUGH, WRITTEN IN A BACK ROOM, SCRUTINIZED BY NOBODY, SANCTIONED BY NOBODY ELSE, RATIFIED BY ANOTHER NOBODY, AND THIS NOW TAKES PRECEDENCE OVER THE WHOLE OF THE REPUBLICS,"BUREACHT NA H'EIREANN" AND SIGNED SEALED AND DELIVERED. - G.D.Flynn
Not correct on two counts. Firstly, the revised treaty was openly arrived at, not in a back room and it must be scrutinized and ratified by each Member State depending on their constitution. Secondly, the “acquis communautaire” of community law is set above the constitution in certain matters only, that is in those areas where the Community has competence. Not in other respects. That is the essence of poling sovereignty. The basic rights enshrined in the charters of the Council of Europe and the United Nations also take precedence over Bunreacht – do you also object to this or any other international body which creates overriding obligations? The International Criminal Court for instance?

"i urge all socialists , republicans and internationalists to vote ye to lisbon"

What about everyone else ?

Anyway for the benefit of us undecides maybe you should actually give us more reasons why you support Lisbon than the fact that the whacked out loonies in RSF are agen it which isint really a strong enough argument to be the sole deciding factor in pushing a floating voter towards the yes camp (although it could certainly be an influencing factor)

While all the points made by RSF are extremely valid, we in the 32CSM believe that all republican groups should have also opposed this treaty on the basis of the British Presence in Ireland and partition. We sent proposals to this effect to other groups.

The only joke is your response, RSF has got it right on this one without doubt. Their statement is what all the left should be saying.

rsf is a joke . now it it intends to oppose the coming together of europe in the lisbon treaty. have they read the history of republicanism and the support wolfe tone gave to a confedration of european nations , with napoleonic militaristic methods. they are dinosaurs but unfortunately they command support among some loonies and gun lovers.i urge all socialists , republicans and internationalists to vote ye to lisbon.
