Omagh Town Councillor Welcomes Removal of British Spy Posts and Cameras

category tyrone | miscellaneous | press release author Thursday May 10, 2007 16:38author by B - Billy Reid, Sinn Féin, Omagh Report this post to the editors

Omagh town Sinn Féin Councillor Martin McColgan has today welcomed the demilitarisation of British Army watch towers in Omagh. The British Army have dismantled a number of Military spy posts and cameras at Lisanelly British Army Camp, ahead of their complete withdrawal of the base by August.
Pull down the watch towers.......
Pull down the watch towers.......

Councillor McColgan who headed the Omagh Residents Demilitarisation Committee said,

“For many years’ residents of the Derry Rd, Strathroy and Gortin Rd areas of the town have had to put up with the intrusive nature of these spy devices as well as the noise from helicopters and gunfire from the shooting range. We have worked for many years to achieve the demilitarisation of the Lisanelly and St Lucia British Army Barracks in Omagh. A number of local residents including myself established the Omagh Residents Demilitarisation Committee to lobby for an end to the occupation of the land, and a hand back to the local community.”

“We have lobbied both the Irish and British Governments and carried out an extensive campaign, including protests, raising public awareness and giving a presentation to the Council, who supported our aims and objectives.”

“Today marks the beginning of the final phase of the demilitarisation of the British War Machine in Omagh and we would welcome to days move in anticipation of the complete withdrawal in August.”

“There is a huge mood of optimism today among local residents especially on the Derry Road and Starthroy at the events today – with people happy to be able to go about their everyday business without intrusion.”

These nauseating hypocrites have, at the same time, demanded that the Nationalist community become agents, informers and touts for the British Crown Forces. Removal of spy posts means nothing because they are pressurising people to spy on their neighbours.

The shamed Provisionals are the most devious bunch of misfits ever to have walked these shores.
