The future is here. By responding intelligently to climate change and energy security we are improving quality of life in our cities and towns.
This day of training highlights priorities for change, demonstrates innovations and introduces practical tools for building sustainable cities and towns.
The good news is that we have a wealth of expertise to transition to more sustainable cities and towns.
Innovations you’ll learn about include The Natural Step, The Merton Rule, The Fingal Directive and Imagineering - Futures Thinking Toolkit.
This event is for planners, city development boards, city councilors, civil servants, architects, design professionals, property developers, Agenda 21 officers, civil society organisations and concerned citizens.

CPD credits available through IPI.

Innovations taught:

The Natural Step provides a clear, compelling, science-based definition of sustainability and a practical strategic planning framework to help communities and organisations make smart economic decisions to move them step-by-step towards a successful and sustainable future.

The ‘Merton Rule’ is the groundbreaking planning policy pioneered by the London Borough of Merton that requires the use of renewable energy onsite to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions in the built environment. Hundreds of local authorities look set to follow Merton’s lead, which will impact all new major development projects throughout the UK.

The Fingal Directive: In response to the EU’s Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, Fingal County Council now requires that new buildings must draw 30 percent of their space and water heating from renewable energy, and consume no more than 50 kilowatt hours per metre squared per annum for water and space heating. Dún Laoghaire / Rathdown County Council has now followed suit.

Imagineering - Futures Thinking Toolkit: Futures, prospective, foresight, scenario planning and urban visioning can successfully be used in promoting urban planning processes. The Toolkit can foster the sustainable development of prosperous cities and towns in a manner that favours a more holistic, inclusive, integrative and creative approach.

Presentations include:

The Fingal Directive
Cllr David Healy, Fingal County Council, involved in introducing strong energy efficiency and renewable energy standards in new housing developments in Fingal
Cllr Ciaran Fallon, Green Party Councillor, responsible for the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council energy efficiency in housing proposal

Using Development Briefs to Increase Sustainability
Dick Gleeson, Dublin City Planner

The Natural Step
John Harrington, Founder of RealEyes, uses The Natural Step in his work with Dublin City Council and businesses

Imagineering - Futures Thinking Toolkit
John Ratcliffe, Futures Academy, Dublin Institute of Technology, Dean of the Faculty of the Built Environment, and expert in the Futures field

The ‘Merton Rule’
Eddy Taylor, Environment and Sustainability Manager, Croyden Council, UK, previously worked at Merton Council and contributed to the original drafting and inception of the Merton Rule

Energy Planning and Community
Henk W. van der Kamp, President, Irish Planning Institute, practicing town planner and Head of School of Spatial Planning at Dublin Institute of Technology
