Council grants injunction against protestors

The High Court has granted an injunction to Limerick County Council against four people who have occupied the county buildings since yesterday afternoon.

Mr Justice Iarfhlaith O'Neill granted the injunction against Donal O'Brien and Kenneth McCarthy from Pallaskenry Co Limerick and Patrick Gleeson and Daniel Foley from Kildimo Co Limerick.

The court was told the four are members of the Bleach Lough Water Retention group and are involved in a long-standing protest against plans by the County Council to change the water supply to the Kildimo/Pallaskenry area.

The case will come before the court again on Friday morning.

For some clarification on this issue. Here we go.On the week prioir to Friday 13th of April there were rumours that the Regularly polluted Deel supply had been turned on to our Spring Water Supply in Pallaskenry. So I contacted the Limerick County Council and was put through to Donal Brennan (who is some kind of engineer for the council). I put some questions to him, firstly was the Deel supply conected to our Spring Water Supply? and secondly was it turned on? In both cases he could not or would not answer my questions beacause he said he did not have the answers.I told him that I had genuine concerns as to the source of water that I was giving to my children. He said the only way to get the answres to my questions was to write to the Council and it would be dealt with in due course. I asked him how long would that take due to the serious nature of my concerns. He said 'ah sure it could take about a week or two'. With that I set about writing my letter to the Conunty Manager, to Paul Crowe, Director of Services, and Donal Brennan. On the 27th of April I recieved a letter from Limerick County Council stating that the water from the Askeaton Scheme is now being supplied to Pallaskenry. In the mean time, on Monday 23rd of April a group from our communtiy went to a monthly meeting of Limerick County Council in order to get some answers to reason why they turned on this other water supply to our Spring Water Supply. There were no answers forthcoming so we asked them from the public gallery but were told we had no rights to interupt their meeting. But we were persistent and I eventually read out a letter that stated that they would no change our Water Supply until after the Judicial Review. As we still did not get any answers we told them that we would not leave until they turned off the Deel Supply. We ended up staying the night. We got food in, we even had the law in trying to bully us out but we were not budging. We slept a bit and spoke to our families and supporters on the outside. On Tuesday morning we went out to the reception area and stayed there for the day. They threatened us with injuctions and High Court action but we still didn't move. On Tuesday night we slept or tried to sleep on the hard seats in the main corridor of the building then on the floor which was a bit softer. It was bad enough when the toilets did not flush but we could not even wash our hands because the water in the toilets was misteriously not working. That was bad enough until just about 3am when we were settleing down for the night, the Air conditioning came on(misteriously) and we were freezing and could not sleep any more.Surely prisoners are treated better than that. Then on Wednesday we were informed that they had south committal orders for us from the High Court yet again. We decided after much dabate with our supporters and familes and our legal people that we would leave the building. At approximately 5.30 we appologised for any inconvienence caused to the council and the public and left the building.
