Peoples' Republic of China asks for new Space Treaty

category international | anti-war / imperialism | other press author Thursday March 29, 2007 18:23author by an t-uasal foghlaí Report this post to the editors

The Peoples' Republic of China have today through their ambassador to the UN at Geneva and their state news agency Xinhua called for a new treaty to stop the militarisation of space arguing (quite correctly) the current international law and treaties are not adecquate to the challenges & criminal potential of state and non-state agencies.

The chinese know what they're talking about. They proved it by destroying one of their own satelites earlier this month.

I can't tell you anymore at the moment than you'll learn by reading these links. If you know anything more about the militarisation of space - now is your opportunity to add data in the comments.

The move by Chinese ambassador Tang Guoqiang follows a joint declaration by Vladamir Putin and Chinese big wig Hu Jintao last Monday which also called for international action on this obviously important subject.

For their part the US appear resistant to any alteration to their commonly perceived "domination" of space - and the Brits.............well anyway.

I may update more later if no-one else links to the legislation and rounds up the background history.
Ireland doesn't at the moment have any weapons systems in geo-stationary orbit or deep space. I just thought I'd let you know that in case you were putting on your coat right now to charge down to Leinster House or Knock airport. Don't worry! launching space craft is still a difficult and very detectable business, the Eire state is not launching & nor are the splendid new government of wee Ulster. There are no orange aliens. But there is a problem - up there! where no one can hear you scream or for that matter see an explosion. It's not like in the movies - you only get visual laser bolts or photon torpedoes with atmosphere. -

There is no smoking gun in a vacuum.

ah geron! here's some Chinese background on their own space program and the Monday summit with Putin. http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2006-10/12/content_51...6.htm
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2007-03/29/content_59...9.htm Though of course they do make mistakes. At the moment they report that the French (whose state stretches from saint pierre et miquelon to ESA launch pad to bikini atoll) have become the first state to publish their own UFO files. Which is rot. The first was Brazil. Great files they are too. But UFO's aren't there to stop silly planet Earthers messing with space. No. That's why we have jedi & timelords & bind brilliant science students with oaths at an early stage in their career before they get moved off to some secret facility down a mine.
Normally you wouldn't read about this stuff, just hear about it afterwards - like when you were told the lunar base had been liquadated in early February. It was up to you if you believed it or not. But this time - it is news. I'm not sure what you can do about it - but I reckon knowing about it - is enough for now.
If you fell you have to do something - Write a letter to your TD demanding that both Eire and Ulster throw their weight behind the civilised nations of this planet in ensuring that space remains demilitarised! it's up to you if you sign it space cadet or not but you do that - you're qualified. olé!
fair play to you.
