Britain is in the throes of a 'superflu' scare, and so is Canada. But oddly, all is calm in Europe, while the WHO reports nothing out of the ordinary. What's really going on, ask Prof Carl Heneghan and Dr Tom Jefferson.

'Safeguarding' is becoming a big problem, and not just because it's being weaponised against conservatives, says Mary Gilleece. Children are being put at risk as criminal conduct is tolerated under 'safeguarding' rules.

Stádas oifigiúil don Ghaeilge san AE

category galway | eu | opinion/analysis author Friday February 16, 2007 15:28author by gníomhaí Report this post to the editors

Faoi dheireadh tá Gaeilge ina teanga oifigiúil den Aontas Eorpach, ach is scannal é nár tharla seo 30 bliain ó shin nuair a chuaigh muid isteach san AE ar dtús.
Measaim gur seo seans deireanach don Ghaeilge teacht slán. Is trua é seo mar tríd is tríd táim i gcoinne an Aontais Eorpach. I mo thuairim, tá an eagraíocht ann go príomha chun an bóthar a réiteach do ghnóthaí móra.

Cinnte, níl an rialtas ag déanamh go leor do chúis na Gaeilge agus tá an chuid is mó don phobal fuarchuiseach. Níl gluaiseacht Ghaelach le feiceáil anseo i nGaillimh ar chor ar bith (de réir cosúlachta, an baile mór is Gaelach in Éireann!), agus nuair nach mbíonn suim ag an óige, tá sé follasach go bhfuil an teanga i dtrioblóid. Tá 'Club Árus na nGael' ('Arse na nGael' mar a tugtar cara ar!!!) ann sa chathair, ach cloistear Fraincis, Polainnis agus ar ndóigh Béarla níos minice ná Gaeilge ansin . Ar a gcampas san ollscoil NUIG, is annamh a cloistear Gaeilge -fiú taobh amuigh do 'Arse' na Gaeilge.

Tuige nach bhfuil an polasaí dátheangach ag an rialtas comhsheasmhach? Mar shampla, tá earraí sna siopaí scríofa i mBéarla amháin. Tá 'predictive text' ar na mobiles amháin le fáil as Béarla agus fós bíonn neart chomharthaí bothar scríofa amháin i mBéarla agus mar sin de.

I ndáirire nílim ró-dhóchasach faoi Gaeilge san AE. Mar is eol duinn, tá easpa aistritheoirí agus teangairí na Gaeilge ann. Chomh maith le sin, beidh baint ag an teanga leis an maorlathas uilig don AE. Mar sin féin, b'fhéidir gur seo seans deireanach don teanga...................
