DUP is beneficiary of daft eejits' ramblings

They couldn't even organise a meeting in a hall

Irish News August 30, 2006 Wednesday - Briefing - The Wednesday Column

DUP is beneficiary of daft eejits' ramblings

Brian Feeney

There was to be a meeting of the Flat Earth Society (Irish republican section) in Toome last night. They were to try to think how to avoid falling off the edge of the world. We were promised a gathering of Real IRA, Continuity IRA, and wait for it, INLA members 'disillusioned with the leadership of Gerry Adams'. So there you are now. You didn't know that Gerry Adams was the leader of the Real IRA, Continuity IRA and INLA.

Interesting nevertheless that they all acknowledge that Adams is the leader of republicanism. Their beef is that they don't like where he's leading the movement. Too bad. They're not in it. So after years of ineffectual bitching about him they've decided to look for 'a way forward for republicanism'.
Brian Feeney takes dim view of non event
Brian Feeney takes dim view of non event

In other words they are bereft of ideas. One of these political luminaries told this newspaper that they're agin the Good Friday Agreement. "The agreement is finished anyway." He added: "It's a lame duck." No mate - if it's finished that's a dead duck. He went on: "That is one of the reasons this meeting is happening now. Its time has come." Hard to know how a meeting could happen if its time hadn't come and indeed its time had not come because the meeting was cancelled due to too much interest. All this guy needs is a straight man to say 'boom, boom' and he could scratch a living as a stand-up comedian.

Normally this sort of guff could be dismissed as a silly season story, to fill pages in August when everyone's on holiday and there's no news. In fact it was floated weeks ago when we were told that about 40 IRA and Sinn Fein members in south Derry had defected. Then the Israelis abolished the silly season by spending most of August destroying Lebanon. Now the story is resurrected again in Sunday newspapers.

A "whole IRA brigade" has split from the movement the papers inform us. Seriously? The really active south Derry brigade, average age, what, 45 plus? There's you thinking all that romantic stuff about brigades and battalions went out when northern command was formed 30 years ago and reorganised the IRA into Active Service Units. Of course the point in talking about an 'entire IRA brigade' is to conjure up the prospect of a renewed campaign by experienced IRA members and indeed one headline warned 'IRA split adds to violence worries'.

Leave aside the small technical point that this 'entire brigade' has no guns or explosives, you don't suppose Special Branch and MI5 know the names of any of these dissidents, do you? What sort of daft eejits call a meeting and let it be known members of IRA splinter groups would be present? What a pantomime.

The real question is who does it benefit? The answer is very clear - the DUP. Those newspapers which tried to hype up the story in July and when that failed regurgitated it on Sunday are not known for their close ties to republicanism.

If there's one development the DUP nay-sayers would love it's a new campaign by IRA dissidents called by any name you like. Republican violence is the great bogeyman DUP politicians use to scare their voters. We've just gone through the quietest summer for decades. The only organised violence is loyalist. The DUP have absolutely no excuse to avoid sharing power in the north.

Isn't it therefore a remarkable coincidence that at exactly this point the republican section of the Flat Earth Society emerges to combine with the Flat Earthers in the DUP to try to sustain each other's fantasies? Still, when the republican Flat Earthers finally have their meeting in some hole in the wall they won't even be able to agree to form a party, let alone agree what the party's for. After all, one of their spokesmen doesn't know the difference between a lame duck and a dead duck. Even so, whether dead duck or red herring, they're an essential ingredient for the DUP's pot.

Toome is on the border of Antrim and Derry, in Antrim, not Derry.

I viewed the documents which Barry refers to in his post on the 32CSM website. There is certainly scope for political alternatives there. The UN submission at least attempts to internationalise the issue of partition but not in a crude or opportunistic way but in a way that can be developed and adopted without recourse to having to be a member of the 32CSM itself. As for the Irish Democracy, A Framework For Unity the depth and scope of its analysis clearly demonstrates that the 32CSM contains a high degree of sophiscated political thought. The document is not a resort to dogma but a keen portrayal of its analysis set amongst the current political and constitutional status quo. More than adequate to rebut the question/mantra of 'what's your alternative?'

Ive an hour to kill and your article is so poor it deserves responding to for that reason alone . That it was actually considered worthy to grace the page of a national newspaper says a lot for the dire standard of journalistic analysis being foisted on the Irish people .

So , Flat Earth society and bereft of ideas ? A bit rich from a supporter of a British treaty described by one of its architects as " Sunningdale for slow learners" . Comical when one stands aghast at the utter disaster which is the GFA .Neither Sinn Fein nor the SDLP have the slightest idea what to do . Its dead , its been dead for years . It doesnt work and British rule in Ireland doesnt work yet all Sinn Fein and the SDLP can do is bleat about restoring the colonial institutions , throwing lifeline after lifeline , week in week out to their British colonial rulers . They have no comprehension as to what can be done outside of this British process . They cant even bring themselves to look at a national alternative . Its beyond their comprehension , unthinkable . A detailed submission was formally presented to both Sinn Fein and the SDLP last year that neithe party has thus far proved capable of responding to . Surely a Flat Earth society , bereft of ideas could be publicly blown out of the water by some razor sharp political analysis from Irelands finest , including Gerry himself . But no response . Could it be they have no ideas ? Bereft perhaps ? He also has time for a sneer at those who recently left the provos in South Derry having no guns or explosives . The appearance of a primed landmine packed with shrapnel in Bellaghy intended for the crown forces a number of weeks ago would indicate that may be wishful thinking on the partof Feeney and others . That the towns youth chased the crown forces through the main street of Belaghy with stones and petrol bombs would also indicate the attack had a certain amount of resonance and support . Similarly the planting of a number of devices along the rilway embankment 2 weeks later in Newry which targetted the crwon forces , who again found themselves under sustained petrol bomb attack from local republican youth indicates that neither explosives , the will to use them against the colonial forces , nor a generation of youth who can sustain a campaign in the future or lacking . Whether in South Derry , South Down or South Armagh .

Red Herrings ? I believe thats how Bertie Ahern described last years farcical attempts by both Sinn Fein and the SDLP to present green papers on unity and persuade him to come up with a government paper . He embarassingly scoffed at their pretentions and told both parties to get lost , Bertie openly scoffed at them as the DUP giggled on their high horse. Not only that but his cross party colleagues in Leinster House have actualy forbade even the discussion of unity and the future structures of a hypothetical united Ireland . Bertie has gone to the Unionists and the capitalist Chamber of Commerce in the North and told them the "constitutional issue is settled" . That is there aint gonna be a united Ireland and thats that . They arent even going to bother planning for one or discussing the structures under which it might operate , theyve banned such discussion.

Then theres Feeneys criticism of the meeting because the media hyped it as a paramilitary terror summit . As Ive earlier pointed out Brian is no stranger to felon setting anti-republican hype himself . Indeed its the very reason he stepped down from politics in disgrace . Brian poured scorn on his opponents in 1989 , accusing them of being inked to terrorism despite endangering the lives of hundreds of innocent people . People may ask themselves how was a tiny Irish language body like Gór na nGael on the Falls rd an opponent of Brian Feeney and the SDLP ? Well at that time ysee the Brits had a cosy wee deal with the SDLP and the bishops in West Belfast . Effectively all the funded ACE schemes were to be under their control . In that unemployment blackspot both the SDLP and the Catholic church were given the privilege of allocating these less than minimum wage tenner more than your dole jobs to the workers of west Belfast . Glór na nGael was fiercely independent of both these agents of social control ,. By refusing to come under the remit of the stoops and the Bishops it had stepped out of line . Therefore Feeney publicly denounced it as a paramilitary front and he Brits attempted to close it down and victimise and demonise its workers . Feeney lied . Glór na nGael was no provo front . While Feeney paid with his political career the stigma of "legitimate target" was publicly conferred by him onto anyone working in the Irish language sector in West Belfast . In fact shortly after his public felon setting the loyalists announced anyone working in this sector could considr themselves as a target . At one stage they even announced traditional musicians would be targetted .

And finally Ill reserve my loudest guffaw for Feeneys crowing over a single meeting being cancelled apparently due to adverse publicity in the media. Take a look at the North of Ireland and the fucking GFA Feeney . This meeting will be re-organised with little difficulty and will take place within a relatively short space of time . It will not take 8 entire fecking years of utter ballsology from every one of its participants and still not take place . It will take place long before any November deadline !!! the people you support have been bollocking about for 8 years with a complete total and utter failure , a total political farce , a red herring , completely bereft of ideas and alternatives . Thats what Adams , Sinn Fein and the SDLP are . If anyones going to fall off the edge of the world its them . Theyve tied themselves to a complete and utter failure and have no alternative to it . Hows that for daft eejits.

There was a well attended meeting of republicans in Derry city last month , approx 150 in attendance mostly from 32csm . It wasnt a public meeting per se but other republicans attended also . The reports from this public meeting in South Derry suggest it may have been cancelled after media hype billing it as some sort of paramilitary summit

that was a seriously crap artic;e from renowned felon setter Brian Feeney . Total cut and paste job for Indymedia too . Standards must be slipping

As a thread on this site shows, there was a successful meeting of republicans like the one attemped in Derry held in Dublin a few months ago, seems like the neo stickies dont have the pull in Dublin that they do in Derry.

Due to the poor quality of the piece i had assumed some eejit had just sat down and typed the first thing that came into his head for Indymedia . It now transpires that this entire article is a cut and paste job , word for word .

http://www.troopsoutmovement.com/latestnews.htm

Brian Feeney did indeed write this dreadful , woeful inane article that passes for journalism and staggeringly got paid for it too . I can remember Brian Feeneys previous contributions to Irish politics while he was an SDLP councillor in Belfast . At the height of the loyalist murder campaign when ordinary catholics were being slaughtered on the slightest pretext ( when they could be bothered with a pretext that is) Mr Feeney got up and announced on the media that a number of Irish language groups , particularly Glór na nGael in West Belfast were in fact public fronts for the provisionals . This was a complete and utter lie , indeed I was personally well acquainted with Glór na nGael during that period and would strongly refute it . Feeney immediately endangered the lives of every last man and women working for these Irish language groups and the children who attended them . The then colonial secretary of State Douglas Hurd publicly thanked him for pointing this out and placed Glór na nGael on a political vetting list , cut its ACE funding for its workers and demonised the organisation in the media as a sinister IRA front organisation . Which it most definitely was not . From that point on every last one of its workers , committee staff , members of the public attending it to learn Irish , anyone connected with it were in immediate peril for their lives . Despite Feeneys guff they carried on working on a volunatary unpaid basis for years until the British were forced to admit the group had no connections with paramilitarism whatoever . Feeney slunk off out of politics in utter disgrace , and a disgrace he was and is .
Sinn Fein no doubt will be happy with this crap from Feeney , casting slurs and ridicule on anyone who steps out of line with the collaborationist nationalist consensus he is always happy to promote , in Hurds day and now Adams . His track record of chucking muck to keep whichever political master is in power happy and earn a few Brownie points is well established .
By your friends shall you be known , and all that , old bean .
Toodle pip

I read through Brian Feeney's Sinn Féin: 100 turbulent years. Had to put it down several times I was laughing so much. Hard to imagine anyone writing such shallow, inaccurate and stupid rubbish. Feeney used to be a John Hume sycophant - now that Adams has taken over as norn iorn's leading spouter of complete bilge, Feeney has dutifully become an Adam's sycophant.
