One Flash and You're Ash!

Sunday is the 61st. anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima. No apologies as yet from the U.S.. Manufacture and deployment of nuclear weapon systems continues. Nonviolent resistance to the prpeeration for nuclear war continues.

CND will hold its annual commemoration of those who suffered the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945, at 1 pm in Merrion Square on Sunday August 6. All are invited to attend.

The Unmanageables. a group of women who have come together from diverse backgrounds and organisations to create symbolic actions around issues of violence to women and children in particular, are creating a symbolic event around the death of children in war.

They will undertake this event in Merrion Square, on Sunday 6 August, following the CND commemoration [a separate event] at approximately 2 pm, to honour the dead children of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and then will march on foot to the Israeli Embassy to remind the world that Israel is a nuclear power and that the dangers of nuclear war and its horrific aftermath have not been eradicated from a world in which violence and war are still seen by the deluded as 'solutions' to intergroup problems. Anyone who wishes to accompany us to the Israeli embassy is welcome.

The point of the commeroration of Hiroshima is to create a link with Irish complicity in war
which is current and which our Taoiseach has refused to condemn. we are delivering a letter of
protest to his dept. If you are creative enough, it could be a peace day: a not in my name day, and there is a whole embassy belt to pick and choose from. The call is for unity and solidarity with victims of war and capitalism. The Unmanageable protest, the letter and invite to other organisations:-

is on 'Events' under Solidarity action, listed for August 6th.

2pm: Merrion Square.

(detour Do berties office)

Then to Israeli embassy for a short agit-prop.

Creative support welcome.
Children and families welcome.

Catholic Worker founder Dorothy Day was one of the first Americans to denounce the bombing of Hiroshima.

Reprinted from The Catholic Worker, (New York ) September 1945

Mr. Truman was jubilant. President Truman. True man; what a strange name, come to think of it. We refer to Jesus Christ as true God and true Man. Truman is a true man of his time in that he was jubilant. He was not a son of God, brother of Christ, brother of the Japanese, jubilating as he did. He went from table to table on the cruiser which was bringing him home from the Big Three conference, telling the great news; "jubilant" the newspapers said. Jubilate Deo. We have killed 318,000 Japanese.

That is, we hope we have killed them, the Associated Press, on page one, column one of the Herald Tribune says. The effect is hoped for, not known. It is to be hoped they are vaporized, our Japanese brothers, scattered, men, women and babies, to the four winds, over the seven seas. Perhaps we will breathe their dust into our nostrils, feel them in the fog of New York on our faces, feel them in the rain on the hills of Eaton.

Jubilate Deo. President Truman was jubilant. We have created. We have created destruction. We have created a new element, called Pluto. Nature had nothing to do with it.

The papers list the scientists (the murderers) who are credited with perfecting this new weapon. Scientists, army officers, great universities, and captains of industry-all are given credit lines in the press for their work of preparing the bomb-and other bombs, the President assures us, are in production now.

Everyone says, "I wonder what the Pope thinks of it?" How everyone turns to the Vatican for judgment, even though they do not seem to listen to the voice there! But our Lord Himself has already pronounced judgment on the atomic bomb. When James and John (John the beloved) wished to call down fire from heaven on their enemies, Jesus said:

"You know not of what spirit you are. The Son of Man came not to destroy souls but to save." He said also, "What you do unto the least of these my brethren, you do unto me."

Ermm.... Didnt Japan start the war with it's medieval slaughter of Chinese peoples?

Nanking anyone? I was under the impression that the americans were bombed first in Hawaii, correct?

Japanese treatment of Prisoners of War from America , Australia, Canada, France, China, Korea, Russia, Phillipines, Dutch, Burmese, Maylasian's, etc.

The Imperial Japanese Army's Unit 782 in China practised Chemical/Biological warfare experiments on POW's.

The Japanese were in fact working on their own Atomic weapons program, does anyone seriously doubt that a country that would shoot it's own wounded, wouldnt use that weapon if it develpoped it first?

Their(Japanese) treatment of Civilians in the areas taken over for Imperial conquest was beyond the pale, look at Korea & the treatment those peoples recieved.

My Word, even a Nazi Party member in Shanghai was disgusted & helped save Numerous Chinese from certain Barbaric torture & death.

Bataan death March, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sumatra, Mukden, Shanghai, Nanking, just some of the Litany of names of infamy associated with the Japanese during world war 2.

Deliberate targeting of Geneva Convention Medical Personnel, Slave Labour of Indigenous peoples(Burma railroad anyone?). The Japanese reaped what they had sown.

I'm going to lift a pint to Col. Tibbets & the Crew of the "Enola Gay", they saved hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Americans, Australians, British, Canadians, Chinese, And Japanese from death during the Planned Invasion of Japan.

Bravo Lads & Thank You

What with their torture, invasion and slaughter of other people. There's a good Philip K. Dick novel _The Man in the High Castle_ about how they're two sides of the same coin.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed not out of military necessity, but rather to intimidate the Russians by showing what murderous mad dogs the USA were.

And, far more people were killed in the fire-bombing of Tokyo (by conventional means) than were killed in the bombing of Hiroshima (about 100,000 vs. 60,000 and Nagasaki was circa 120,000).

Nice to see someone defending the deliberate targetting of civilians as a legitimate way of conducting warfare. No doubt you also boldly proclaim the right of Al Qaida to bomb the twin towers and the Israelis to bomb Lebanon?

Seems as though some here are upset the Japanese lost, would you have approved it's usage against white germans? most likely yes. Japan is still hated in Asia for it's crimes, ask a Chinese, or Korean if they have sympathy for the Japanese?

It's quite easy from Dublin to hold the precept that only the yanks are evil. When you've had the UK/US/FR protect you from evil. It's another thing alltogether, to see the visceral hatred from Asians towards the peoples who bayonetted their grandfathers, & made the Grandmothers into "Comfort women". The Jappo's started it, the Yanks finished it, too fooking bad, deal with it.

20 folks gathered at the memorial in Merrion Square on the 61st. atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Folks came from CND, Pax Christi, Church of Ireland, Quakers, Unmanageables, Catholic Worker & Ploughshares. Cards to anti-war prisoners were signed with messages of solidarity, A circle was formed and reflections on Hiroshima and the present state of nuclear warfare preperations were shared. The gathering closed with a minute's silence for the dead of Hiroshima, Nagasaki and all those killed in the preparations for nuclear war.

Look at the stats iWW2was a Russian/German war, no matter what Hollywood has led you to believe.

Hiroshima was the first shot in the 50 year Cold War (with a lot of hot brushfires) that followed. Russia got no sympathy for the 20 million lost fighting Hitler's nazism. Israel got a blank cheque for creating a race based state as Amerikkka's beach head in the Middle East.

Since the defeat of the USSR and the end of a bipolar world Amerikkka projects into places it would never had dared to eg. Iraq. The world is a lot more unstable place with reckless neocons finger on the nuke buttons.

Give up on this self pity anti-american everyone hates us crap. It took a while for German accents to become acceptable after WW2 and the Afrikaan one has just been rehabilitated with the fall of apartheid. Shock horror anti-semiticism is on the rise, what do you expect with the butchery in Palestine & Lebanon. The American accent is suspect since Vietnam, resented wherever you go in your ever expanding empire.. What do you expect? You've never apologised for Hiroshima! Hardly a surprise you didn't break stride in the '60's butchering 2 1/2 million Indo Chinese. The '70's masacring Chileans, Argentinians, Brazillians in coup after coup fighting freedom wherever it raised its ugly unprofitable face. Spending the '80's butchering Central Americans.

You will leave Iraq like you left Vietnam - with your tail between your legs, pushing helicopter gunships off your aircraft carriers to make room for your lackeys. Just a matter of when and how many people you're going to butcher before you leave. Bush announces today that if "Iraq decends into civil war, he will pull out the U.S. military out immediately!" Well Bubba wake up and smell the coffee!

They were justified then, it helped end the war quicker. The Planned Invasion of Japan took into consideration the Japanese fanatical belief in the Emperor as god. There are reliable estimates of casualties running into a Million or more for both japanese & usa persons together. The Germans, Japanese, Italians, Americans, British, etc. all used Bombing of civilian areas as a justified objective.
The thinking at that time was the civilians worked making the weapons of death, so were fair targets.
The USAAF went with "Daylight Precision Bombing"(if it could be called that, suffering enormous casualties in the process), The RAF(suffered an even more tragic casualty list), LW, IJA/IJN, RA all went with area bombing, either way horrors for the persons below. Japan never showed any qualms about killing civilians, did not abide by either the Geneva or Hague conventions, so to say it a One sided war is rather fatuous. Italy used chemical weapons against the Ethiopians, Libyans during their campaigns. Japan dropped Biological weapons on Chinese Cities. the RAF firebombed Dresden, Cologne for little results.

"Shinzo Abe, the front-runner in the race to become the next prime minister, visited the Yasukuni Shrine war memorial in April, according to Japanese news reports. Mr. Abe, the chief cabinet secretary and a right-wing nationalist who is expected to succeed Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi when he retires next month, refused to confirm news of his visit, which was reported by all the major news media. The reports of the visit drew criticism from South Korean and Chinese officials, who regard the shrine, where Class A war criminals are deified, as a symbol of Japanese militarism."

Press Release, August 5, 2006

"The Government of Israel has recently purchased from the United States bunker-busting bombs (GBU-28), for use in its war in Lebanon. These bombs contain depleted uranium - a carcinogenic substance that spreads in the form of a toxic and radioactive dust, which enters the lungs and bones and is especially harmful to babies and young children.
We call on the Government of Israel not to make use of these bombs.
This call is of special significance on August 6, the anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

These days of war remind us of the dangers facing humanity, when the warring sides are equipped with nuclear weapons and radioactive materials.
The State of Israel must not resort to the use of weaponry that can cause environmental damage lasting hundreds of years, or any weapon of mass destruction.
We call on the Government Israel and all the governments in the Middle East to renounce weapons of mass destruction without delay!
A Middle East free from all weapons of mass destruction would be the best guarantee against their use.

Signed: The Israeli Committee for a Middle East Free from Atomic, Biological & Chemical Weapons
