Break The Connection – March with Ógra Shinn Féin in Bodenstown ‘06!

press release
Friday June 16, 2006 21:59 by Éirigi - Ógra Shinn Féin
The Annual Wolfe Tone Commemoration takes place this Sunday 18 June at 2pm in Bodenstown.
For the geographically challenged, Bodenstown is near the village of Sallins, County Kildare. For the historically challenged it is the last resting place of Theobald Wolfe Tone, founder of the United Irishmen and the first leading light of Irish Republicanism.
The 25th anniversary of the 1981 Hunger Strike will form the theme of this year's Bodenstown Commemoration. The main speaker is Sinn Féin Ard Chomhairle member and North Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly.
Ógra Shinn Féin are urging mass mobilisation amongst their activists and supporters for the commemoration this year.
Monaghan Ógra SF lead the crowd in Bodenstown! Barry McColgan, spokesperson for the Republican Youth movement said,
“Wolfe Tone is the epitomy of Irish Republicanism, of a time when all the people of Ireland, Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter where united under one banner, to break the connection with England. It is of the utmost importance that Ógra Shinn Féin mobilise to commemorate this fine patriot, and to remind people of the brave legacy of the United Irishmen!”
“South Down Ógra Shinn Féin’s colour party will lead the Ógra contingent, Ógra activists are asked to wear their polo shirts, also Ógra cumann are asked to bring along banners, if you don't have one, get active and make one now. All Ógra activists are asked to assemble at the Bridge in Sallins at 1.30pm sharp to form up behind the Ógra colour party!”
Wolftone once said, 'From my earliest youth I have regarded the connection between Ireland and England as the curse of the Irish nation, and felt convinced, that while it lasted, this country would never be free or happy. In consequence, I determined to apply all the powers which my individual efforts could move, in order to separate the two countries'.
McColgan concluded, “We must mobilise Republican Youth in numbers for Bodenstown, leaving the graveyard utterly determined to break the connection with England!”

Make the break with provisionalism. Support authentic Republicanism.
What's with the spelling of 'Shinn' in Ogra's title? Why isn't it spelled 'Sinn', as it is in Sinn Fein? I realize that I might be showing just how limited my Irish is.
Anybody know?
It is an aspirated form of "Sinn" to indicate the genitive case.
Ogra Shinn Fein = The Youth (Wing/Branch) OF Sinn Fein (hence genitive).

Many years ago I along with other young Republicans marched in Bodenstown. We were proud to stand at the grave of Wolfe Tone and reaffirm our commitment to the struggle to rid Ireland of British rule and work for the benefit of all the people. Since then many of these other young people who were there and others who had not attended on that year are sadly dead, fighting for that cause. Republicans still march at Bodenstown but they also aspire to be a part of a Government which will continue to be an integral part of the UK. The Republican Leadership have surrendered our weapons and dismissed our army in a vain effort to appeal to Unionism and be allowed to partake in that Government. The People we struggled to free are now terrorised by drug dealers, death riders, and other assorted scum, but Sinn Fein's hands are tied by the Brits and the Unionists. The penance for their 'sins' is to watch while the people suffer at the hands of the low life's.
What a Waste of young lives!
And they marched them up to the top of the hill and they bused them down again... Nothing like a good march to pretend that your still Republicans, eh?
what would you do with the drug dealers, deathriders and other assorted scum if your hands weren't tied?
Ensure that they had no place in our communities even if it meant forcing them out physically and by showing them and our communities that Republicans were as strong as they were in the past in the defense of the common people and not weakened by Political considerations and the overwhelming desire to become second fiddle to extreme Unionists in a Parliament where petty bickering would be the order of the day for years to come. But sadly Republicans have become too engrossed in being a part of this Political whirlpool and repeatedly retort with "What do you want us to do? Organise and do it yourself! You voted for us so we have to be politicians bugger getting our hands dirty!" The attitude of the SDLP is now also the attitude of PSF.
that's just vigilantism.. a young fella in our estate had his legs broken by so called republican adults after the briefest of kangaroo courts .. people like you are scary sean oglach with your lust for violence and sense that you're always right.. does getting your hands dirty make you feel like a big man
OK Irish what would you do? It always boils down to battering poor innocent wee lads. Poor innocent death riders, Poor innocent wee lads who attack and almost kill people for kicks. What would YOU do if one of these innocent wee lads almost beat your mother to death for her purse. Go to the Police? These kids know that they can get away with practically anything, because the Provos have abandoned the people for politics and there is no proper justice on the estates. Then what about the poor innocent drug dealers, child abusers, burglars, etc? Oh I know what we can do, we'll wait until SF gets into Government and sets up an acceptable Police force [ Like the Gardai! ] Right we'll just wait.... Someones family car is burning down the road...No we'll just wait... A gang is kicking someone to death... When Sinn Fein gets into Government we'll phone the acceptable Peelers... And Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall!
Well said Seanoglach. Round our way there was a young one dealing hash and me and the boys sorted her out good and proper.. she won't be doing it again, or living around here for that matter.. As for the deathriders a bullet in the knee is your only man.
There are more English-English people like me in Kildare in 2006, thanks to the economy. My kids learn gaelic - a small price to pay. Eire is great.
Break the connection - stop northern folks with silly flags cluttering up the Sallins area because they are stuck in some kind of identity rut.
Like Wolfe Tone, do something different, think outside the box. Try to get on with your neighbours in Ulster instead of preaching to the converted.
