It is essential that people realise we did not debate the age of consent between the 23rd of May 2006 and the 2nd of June 2006. We were brought through a managed crises with a role to play for everyone which dealt with sexual offences legislation and now it is all supposed to be over & we all can slap each other on the back.
The limits of the democratic system have always been gender politically related. Democracy is rooted in sycophantic arguments between men who never allowed their wives to votes, kept concubines and slaves & put crudely - fucked who they wanted with impunity.
The history of "sexuality" is in fact much shorter than most who write or theorise about it would like to admit. For example I have always seen the "Oscar Wilde" case as one which dealt with "power relationships" more than anything to do with "sexuality". From the moment he first used the prostitutes of Picadilly to the moment he faced Carson in court - the real element was classism and power. In today's society too much sexual activity is still related to power relationships based on economic criteria. The above article though was telling even if it only reported the "sexual interaction criteria" of one individual, it signals how many challenges face Irish society in the future as they deal with "economic power" and building a "multi-racial" society. But remember we haven't debated the age of consent yet nor even touched the question of personal development. & these are questions quite probably beyond the intellectual or moral capabilites of most in Irish public life. Let us wonder at wqhat age we allow people operate heavy machinery such as a car? Now let us reflect the different mortality rates associated with male and female use of the car? All this last week one case of a young man left a cripple has snuggled in the background of our "great democratic closing of ranks". If we had ever properly debated at what age males or females be allowed drive, based on the statistical probabilty of the harm they are observed to do -
quite.
So..................... less of the collective smugness.
whew! after reading all that I am surprised no one broke a hip.
Mike and Mary are brother and sister. They go on holiday in France and stay in an isolated cabin for the night. They decide for fun to have sex. Mike uses a condom and Mary is already on the pill. None of them have any disases and they enjoy themselves. Afterward they decide that this will be a one off and they will tell nobody about it. In fact this trust brings them closer together as siblings. There future relationships with their partners are actually enriched .
How can this be considered morally wrong?
You contradict yourself at the end of this rant when you suggest that our society is less liberal than some might think because we have not made all the actions that we might deplore illegal... in fact it is far more logical to say that because we have not made all the actions we deplore illegal, that society is more liberal than some might think.
My dominant fantasy is to have the last ten minutes back... and not waste my time on this bizarre nonsense.
