When Ben Pile moved into a new house he got a nasty surprise. It had a prepayment meter that was about to run out of credit. Fixing this proved to be absurdly hard, which, presumably, is just what the green lobby wants.

An Chlár Sábháilteacht do Daltaí Scoile san tAire Oideachais Mary Hanafin

category national | sci-tech | news report author Thursday May 11, 2006 09:34author by Liam Ó Maoláin - Freelance Journalist Report this post to the editors

This was a recent interview with Education Minister Mary Hanafin, and is being published to meet a college requirement. The interview was originally recorded for Griff FM in English, and native Irish speakers should ignore any errors in my translation.

Lainseáil an tAire Oideachais agus Eolaíochta Mary Hanafin feachtas sábháilteacht agus thug sí agallamh domsa ar an tionscnamh, le déanaí. Tugann an clár aghaidh ar timpealleacht sábháilte ar an idirlíon do dhaltaí scoile, agus cuidíonn sé leis an troid i gcoinne drochíde ar pháistí.
‘Beidh an Roinn ag tógail druid i dtreo idirlíon sábháilte’ a deir an tAire:
Liam: Cad iad san na craobhacha áirithe?
An tAire: An chéad cheann na an teicneolaíocht is déanaí ar an idirlíon; an dára ceann eolas ag múinteoirí agus tuismitheoirí agus oideachais a thabhairt dóibh; agus an cheann deireanach scagairí a choinnéail ar an ghréasán.
Liam: Cád é an aidhm de tionschnamh seo?
An tAire: Bí aireach ar an idirlíon – eolas agus comhairle a thabhairt do scoileanna.
Liam: Cád é an t-ionad atá freagrach as?
An tAire: An t-ionad Náisiúnta don Teicneolaíocht san Oideachas atá freagrach as an tionscnamh seo.
Liam: Cén uair á thosaigh an chlár seo?
An tAire: Dhá bhliain ó shin – Rinne an t-ionad “iarracht tabhairt faoi na priomhcheisteanna agus na torthaí” I rith an dá bhliain seo, agus a “bhaineann leis an” ábhar “imní a bhíonn ar mhúinteoirí”, tuismitheoirí agus coimirceoirí “maidir le húsáid agus rochtain daltaí” scoile ar an ghréasán domhanda. (Suíomh gréasáin: Ionad Náisiúnta don Teicneolaíocht san Oideachas). Ar an gcúis ceanna, tá mé ag smaoineamh freisin ar na teachtaireachtaí téacs ar guthán soghluaiste agus an sábháilte a thabhairt leis.
Liam: Cád a chuirfidh an tionscnamh seo i grích?
An tAire: Síochán a thabhairt do thuismitheoirí agus múinteoirí. Smaoinigh mé ar an tionscnamh ar lá idirlíon sábháilte Eorpach. Sólathraítear nuacht í gceithre slí: lena n-áirítear riomhphost, comhrá agus surfáil, agus cluiche ríomhaireacha.
Liam: An bhfuil an tionscnamh an-tábhachtach ag an t-am seo, nuair atá na scoileanna Éireannacha ag rolladh amach ‘Broadband’.
An tAire: Nuair a bheidh an bhonneagar réidh, beidh an idirlíon sábháilte agus faisnéiseach, agus beidh na paistí sásta i suíomh foghlaimtha. Is uirlis foghlaimtha maith é an idirlíon, ach ní mór súil a choiméad ar an teicneolaíocht nua.
Bhí an tAire ag cáint ar stáisiún raidió Coláiste Uí Ghríofa. Taispeánann na suirbhéireachtaí go gcreideann páistí an eolas a léinn said ar an idirlíon. Rinnadh an suirbhéireacht Eorpach ag Nollaig 2005, í roinnt tíortha eile agus san AE, agus foilseofar torthaí na suirbhéireachta í nAibréan 2006.
Go iontach, taispeánann huimhreacha go raibh sábháilte ard ar leanaí Eireanneacha i gcomparáid le leanaí Ioruacha. Léim leanaí Éireannaí leabhair nuair a bhíonn siad ag dheanamh obair-scoil abhaile. Níl aon ionadh é go bhfuil caílíní níos eolasaí na buachaillí faoi cursaí sábháilte.
Tionscnaimh eile a theilg an tAire agus an Roinn Oideachais agus Eolaíochta le déanaí, d’oscail sí Gaelcholáiste i gContae na Gaillimhe, foilsiú Leoithne Ghaoithe do na múinteoirí, d’oscail sí caint agus comhdháil i gColáiste de hÍde sa Tamhlacht, Báile Átha Cliath ar Oideachais Ríomhaire Sochaí na hÉireann – ‘Na scoileanna san aois-digiteach’ – agus shínigh sí comhaontú cáilíochta lei an tSín agus chun ceangail oideachais idir an dá thír a leathnú.
