Speakers from Bolivia & Ecuador visit Mayo to share experiences on natural resource issues

Since 1997, the Latin American Solidarity Centre, a group promoting cultural awareness and links between Ireland and Latin America, has organized a week of nationwide events in April dealing with Latin American issues.

The theme for this year’s Latin American Week is ‘Ownership of Natural Resources in Latin America & Ireland’, and the main event was a national conference, titled ‘Ownership and Exploitation of Natural Resources in Ireland and Latin America’, held at The Marino Institute in Dublin on April 22nd.

Following this conference, two visiting speakers RICARDO BUITRON from Ecuador and TANIA QUIROZ from Bolivia will be giving public talks around Ireland.
Ricardo Buitrón will talk about the issue of the privatisation of water and gas resources in Latin America.
Tania Quiroz works with the Defence of Water and Life movement in Bolivia. She speak about the impact of IMF/World Bank policies and the successful resistance to the privatisation of water resources.

Main Event in Mayo
On Tuesday April 25th, the visiting speakers will travel to Mayo. They will be met in Castlebar by members of the Rossport campaign. From there, they will travel to spend the night in Rossport to share experiences with the people there.
